Audiences in Surrey can look forward to a delightful holiday experience as O Christmas Tea: A British Comedy makes its return to the Bell Performing Arts Centre for two performances on December 27, 2023. The show will run at 3 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m., showcasing a blend of physical comedy reminiscent of pantomime, quick-witted dialogue, and interactive moments designed to engage the audience.

Starring Aaron Malkin as James and Alastair Knowles as Jamesy, the production promises a whimsical holiday adventure. The duo has been touring this show across 37 cities as part of a 60-show schedule this fall and winter. Fans of British comedy, particularly styles akin to Monty Python and Mr. Bean, are likely to find this performance particularly appealing.

According to Knowles, “Theatre is, in its essence, an exercise in imagination, a suspension of disbelief.” In O Christmas Tea, the characters possess contrasting perspectives on reality. Malkin’s character perceives the on-stage antics as make-believe, while Knowles’ character believes they are genuine, creating a unique dynamic that draws the audience into the fantastical world of the production.

The pair has been performing O Christmas Tea for several years, continuously evolving the show to keep it fresh. Malkin noted, “At this time of year, we’re inspired to dream big and tap into our child-like imagination. This show brings family and friends together.” He also expressed excitement about introducing new elements to enhance the experience for returning audiences.

As the performance progresses, the aim is for the audience to leave with a sense of joy and shared play. Knowles emphasized that they want adults to feel lighter and more connected, saying, “We hope to foster a deeper connection not only with their immediate companions but also with the entire audience who shared in the magical experience.”

In addition to Surrey, O Christmas Tea recently performed in Richmond and Burnaby. After the Surrey shows, the production will continue in the Metro Vancouver area, with performances scheduled in New Westminster on December 28 and North Vancouver on December 29-30. Tickets can be purchased at ochristmastea.com or by calling the Bell box office at 604-507-6355.

For those looking for more festive entertainment, the Royal Canadian Theatre Company is presenting a pantomime version of The Little Mermaid at Surrey Arts Centre from December 19-28, including a special Boxing Day evening show at 7:30 p.m. Directed by Kerri Norris, this production promises a humorous take on the classic tale, featuring quirky characters like Ariel and Chef Phishandchips.

Looking ahead, the Arts Club Theatre Company will bring Burning Mom to the Surrey Arts Centre from January 14-24, 2026. This solo show stars award-winning actor Susinn McFarlen and is described as an inspiring comedy based on real-life events, centered around a mother’s journey to the Burning Man festival following the unexpected death of her husband.

Tickets for upcoming performances can also be obtained through purchase.surrey.ca or by calling 604-501-5580. As the holiday season unfolds, Surrey’s theatre scene offers a range of entertaining options for audiences of all ages.
