Calgary Zoo to Euthanize Aging Grizzly Bear Khutzy Today
The Calgary Zoo has announced that it will euthanize a 35-year-old grizzly bear named Khutzeymateen, affectionately known as Khutzy, due to a significant decline in her health. The decision, communicated to the public on September 30, 2025, follows concerns regarding Khutzy’s well-being, particularly stiffness linked to arthritis and the effects of aging.
Animal care specialist Nicole Yeoman emphasized the bear’s strong personality and her role in educating visitors about grizzly bears and safe coexistence with wildlife. Khutzy, who was born at the zoo, has been a beloved figure for many years, fostering a connection between the public and wildlife conservation efforts.
The zoo’s decision was made after careful consideration of Khutzy’s condition. Yeoman noted that while supportive care has provided the bear with comfort, it may soon fall short of her needs. “We want to ensure that Khutzy does not suffer,” Yeoman stated, reflecting the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare.
Earlier this month, Khutzy’s mate, Skoki, was also euthanized, marking a poignant moment for the zoo staff and visitors alike. The passing of both bears highlights the challenges faced by aging wildlife in captivity and the critical decisions that must sometimes be made in the name of compassion.
As the zoo prepares to say goodbye to Khutzy, the staff continues to reflect on the impact she has had on both the institution and its visitors. The Calgary Zoo, part of the Wilder Institute, remains dedicated to its mission of wildlife conservation and public education, using instances like Khutzy’s story to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting natural habitats and the creatures that inhabit them.
