Candice Guardino Launches “Italian Bred” Comedy Special, Plans Ahead
Stand-up comedian Candice Guardino recently premiered her comedy special, “Italian Bred,” on January 27, 2026, available on platforms such as Amazon and Apple TV. The special reflects her unique blend of humor derived from her Italian upbringing, showcasing the chaotic yet loving essence of family life.
Guardino shared the origins of her show, explaining that it began as a mere five-minute routine at a comedy club where she impersonated her mother. What started as a small performance evolved into a full-fledged comedy special, with stories about her father, grandmother, and sister, ultimately expanding to thirty minutes of material that resonated with audiences. “The very first laugh hooked me!” she recalled. She emphasized the importance of grounding the show in her own perspective, stating, “At its heart, the show is a love letter to our beginnings: the chaos, the drama, the love… and, of course, the food.”
Finding Inspiration in Everyday Life
Much of Guardino’s comedic material stems from everyday experiences. She highlights the relatable aspects of family drama, relationships, and the absurdities of adult life. “I like to take what’s familiar to everyone and exaggerate it just enough so people see themselves in it,” she said, adding that laughter can foster a sense of shared experience. “Let’s laugh through our tears,” she encouraged, underscoring the therapeutic aspect of comedy.
In today’s digital landscape, she finds both empowerment and overwhelm. The rise of streaming services and social media has transformed how comedians create and share their work. “You don’t have to wait for a gatekeeper anymore,” Guardino explained. However, she also noted the challenges of being a creator in the digital age, where the pressure to produce content is ever-present. “You’re the creator, marketer, editor, strategist,” she said, acknowledging the multifaceted role comedians must now embrace. For her, the essence of art remains honest storytelling, regardless of the platform.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Guardino has ambitious plans that include writing a comedic essay book, developing a television show, and creating a film. “Maybe one day, a Broadway run will happen too… Hey, a girl can dream!” she remarked. She also aims to tackle another theatrical show focused on the chaos of modern life, addressing themes like marriage, parenthood, and the humorous challenges that arise.
Reflecting on her career, Guardino noted that defining moments often come from quieter experiences rather than high-profile successes. “Performing for twelve people and giving it everything I had” shaped her resilience. The challenges of motherhood, especially after a long fertility journey, have also redefined her creative outlook, allowing her to create from a place of truth rather than seeking external validation.
For emerging comedians and writers, Guardino offers straightforward advice: “Write your truth. Not what you think people want to hear; tell what scares you a little.” She encourages aspiring artists to take immediate action, whether through performances or writing, emphasizing that consistency is key in a competitive field.
When asked about the meaning of success, Guardino described it as alignment between personal values, passions, and professional endeavors. “It’s about personal connection,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of genuine relationships built through her work. “Real success is fulfillment—with purpose and freedom attached to it.”
In her closing thoughts, she expressed a desire for viewers to recognize the universality of family through her special. “If the special brings families together to laugh, maybe cry a little, and share their own funny stories… then it’s done its job,” she stated.
