Gathie Falk, the renowned Vancouver-based painter, sculptor, and installation artist, has passed away at the age of 97. Falk died on December 22, 2023, in Vancouver, leaving behind a legacy that has significantly influenced Canadian contemporary art.

Born on January 31, 1928, in Alexander, Manitoba, Falk grew up in challenging circumstances after the death of her father when she was just ten months old. Despite the lack of artistic resources in her early life, she developed a passion for art, which she pursued fervently even amid financial difficulties.

“Gathie was fearless,” said Andy Sylvester, owner of the Equinox Gallery and a close friend. He described her as a driven artist who maintained a profound curiosity about the world, adapting her materials to express her visionary ideas. Falk’s work spanned various mediums, including sculpture, painting, and performance art, showcasing her innovative spirit.

One of Falk’s most notable works, Cement With Poppies, created in 1982, depicted poppies spilling over the sidewalks surrounding her home in Kitsilano. She famously expressed the importance of intimately knowing one’s surroundings:

“I feel that unless you know your own sidewalk really intimately, you’re never going to be able to look at the pyramids and find out what they’re about.”

Her ability to evoke powerful emotional responses is exemplified by her installation piece Herd I and Herd II (1974-1975), which featured painted plywood horses in mid-gallop. Sylvester recalls how Luke Rombout, then-director of the Vancouver Art Gallery, was so captivated by the piece that he immediately expressed interest in acquiring it.

Falk’s journey as an artist began in earnest later in life. After a challenging career as a schoolteacher, a role she found unfulfilling, she decided to fully commit to her passion. In her late thirties, she withdrew her modest pension to pursue art full-time. Sylvester noted that this decision marked the beginning of a prolific period for Falk, who became known for her experimental approaches that aligned with the pop-art movements of the 1960s.

Her installation titled Home Environment established her reputation as a serious artist. It showcased a visual language that resonated with the avant-garde artists of her time. Falk’s works frequently drew inspiration from everyday life, such as her piece 196 Apples, part of her Fruit Piles series created in 1969-1970, inspired by the neatly arranged fruit at local greengrocers.

Discipline played a crucial role in Falk’s creative process. In an interview, she once remarked on the nature of inspiration, stating,

“I don’t think I am inspired every day. I have to function like an athlete. When you aren’t inspired, you just get to work.”

This pragmatic approach allowed her to maintain a steady output throughout her career.

Falk enjoyed a remarkable career, having held over 50 solo shows and three major retrospectives, including the Gathie Falk Retrospective at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1985 and Revelations at the McMichael Gallery in 2023. Her contributions earned her numerous accolades, including the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2003 and the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts in 2013. She was also appointed to both the Order of British Columbia in 2002 and the Order of Canada in 1997.

Even in her later years, Falk’s creativity thrived as she experimented with lighter materials, such as papier-mâché, allowing her to continue creating dynamic pieces. Sylvester reminisced about the time he helped her transport a canoe she had crafted to the Equinox Gallery, emphasizing her unwavering determination and unique artistic vision.

Falk’s impact on the art community and her fearless approach to creativity will be remembered fondly. She leaves behind a rich legacy of artistic exploration that continues to inspire new generations of artists.
