Chris Martin Confirms Kiss Cam Will Continue at Coldplay Shows

The kiss cam will remain a staple at Coldplay concerts, according to lead singer Chris Martin. During a performance on August 18, 2023, at Craven Park in Hull, England, Martin addressed the recent controversy surrounding the Jumbotron feature, which gained notoriety during a concert in Massachusetts last month.
Referring to the incident, Martin said, “Thank you for coming again after that debacle,” acknowledging the backlash that followed a viral moment involving two audience members, Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot. The pair were caught on camera during a performance at Gillette Stadium on July 16, 2023, leading to a scandal that resulted in Byron’s resignation from his position as CEO of Astronomer just days later.
The kiss cam moment unfolded as Martin jokingly pointed out the couple, saying, “Oh, look at these two! All right, c’mon, you’re OK. Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” This lighthearted banter took an unexpected turn when it was later revealed that Byron and Cabot were involved in an extramarital affair, prompting a media frenzy.
In response to the fallout, Astronomer released a statement on July 19, emphasizing its commitment to company values and announcing Byron’s resignation. The statement read, “Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.” Cabot resigned a week later, further escalating the crisis for the company.
Despite the controversy, Martin reaffirmed the band’s intention to keep the kiss cam feature. “We’ve been doing it a long time, and it is only recently that it became a … yeah,” he explained. “Life throws you lemons, and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you.”
Adding a further layer to the unfolding story, Gwyneth Paltrow, Martin’s ex-wife, was hired as a temporary spokesperson for Astronomer. In a video posted on the company’s LinkedIn page, Paltrow stated, “I’ve been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer,” addressing the surge of inquiries the company received in light of the scandal.
The incident raises questions about the implications of public displays of affection at live events, particularly when they involve unexpected revelations. Coldplay continues to draw large crowds, and with the kiss cam firmly in place, it remains to be seen how the band will navigate the complexities of their fans’ interactions in future performances.
