Couple Gets Engaged Live on CHEK at Ladysmith Festival of Lights
Thousands gathered at the annual Ladysmith Festival of Lights on November 27, 2025, where a surprise engagement unfolded live on CHEK News. The event, known for its dazzling display of lights, featured a special proposal that captivated both the audience at the venue and viewers at home.
This year’s celebration, dubbed “Light Up Night,” showcased over 300,000 illuminated bulbs. CHEK TV’s hosts, Jeff King and Ed Bain, were on location to capture the festive atmosphere and engage with attendees. As part of their live coverage, King began interviewing a couple in the crowd, focusing on attendee Amber Evans.
“What did you think of the light up, Amber?” King asked. She responded with enthusiasm, praising the event. Suddenly, in a moment of unexpected excitement, King handed the microphone to her boyfriend, Mark.
“This is my chance!” Mark exclaimed, turning to Amber. He expressed his deep feelings, saying, “Amber Evans, we’ve been through a whole lot of stuff together you and me. I would like you to be my wife for the rest of my days.”
As he dropped to one knee, the crowd held its breath. “So I’m wondering if you would marry me today,” Mark continued, presenting a ring-sized box. Amber, astonished, paused for a moment before joyfully replying “yes” into the microphone.
The crowd erupted in cheers as the couple embraced, celebrating their newfound engagement. King, taking back the microphone, congratulated Amber, who was visibly emotional. “How’s this for a light up?” he asked. “I don’t even know what to say,” she replied, still in disbelief.
Later in the broadcast, King learned that the couple had been together for 15 years. “It’s about damn time,” he joked, offering his warm congratulations. Mark had approached King about proposing just 20 minutes before the light-up countdown, adding an element of suspense to the evening.
The couple traveled from Victoria to attend the festival, and their live engagement added a memorable highlight to an already festive occasion. The Ladysmith Festival of Lights continues to draw crowds each year, showcasing community spirit and joy, while moments like these remind everyone of the magic of love during the holiday season.
