Embracing Discomfort: A Personal Journey Through Quebec
Nadine Robinson has embarked on a transformative journey through Quebec, focusing on personal growth by embracing discomfort. Throughout her trip, she challenged herself to engage in activities that pushed her limits, guided by the belief that true rewards lie just beyond fear.
The adventure began before Robinson even set foot in Quebec. Despite her apprehension about driving in unfamiliar cities, she volunteered when the group needed an extra driver. This decision led her to stay at the luxurious Monsieur Jean Hotel in Quebec City, a reward that demonstrated her own capabilities.
As part of her itinerary, Robinson faced another challenge: a 16-kilometre hike in the stunning Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier. Although this distance was more than three times her usual hiking length, she agreed to the trek. At the summit, her hiking companion Patrick suggested running down. Although she had never jogged more than six kilometres, Robinson found herself saying, “OK,” embracing the challenge with enthusiasm. The reward for her courage was breathtaking views of glacial valleys and vibrant birch forests.
After the hike, Robinson took a frosty dip in the Jacques-Cartier River, further testing her comfort zone. A visit to Le Nordique Spa in Stoneham provided a much-needed respite, reinforcing the idea that sometimes discomfort is essential for growth.
The following morning, Robinson faced yet another challenge: an early hike around Quebec City, which included navigating hundreds of stairs to reach the Plains of Abraham. The breathtaking vistas and the discovery of a delicious raspberry croissant on the way back became her rewards for this early morning commitment.
In Tadoussac, Robinson continued to seek discomfort, agreeing to a three-hour kayaking expedition with Mer et Monde. This adventure allowed her to witness humpback and minke whales, alongside harbour seals, enriching her experience in the stunning fjord.
Robinson also embraced the unique experience of cani-hiking, where she was pulled by a sled dog named Sirius. Each moment pushed her further from her comfort zone, leading her closer to a sense of true contentment.
She reflected on her experiences, stating, “The old saying ‘no pain, no gain’ has some truth.” Robinson noted that meaningful change often requires stepping outside of one’s comfort zone and accepting the discomfort that comes with it.
Her final adventure involved snorkelling in the frigid waters of the St. Lawrence River. Surrounded by delicate marine life, she found joy even in the initial shock of the cold water. The laughter shared with her snorkeling partner highlighted the importance of camaraderie in pushing through challenging experiences.
As Robinson concludes her journey, she recognizes the importance of seeking discomfort in life. “The world opens up to us when we step beyond what is comfortable,” she shares.
Robinson’s experiences serve as a reminder that while discomfort can be daunting, it often leads to personal growth and unforgettable memories. She encourages her readers, including her children, to embrace challenges and remember that everything they desire often lies just beyond fear.
This exploration through Quebec not only pushed Robinson’s limits but also illuminated her philosophy of living life to the fullest.
