Emma Stone Boldly Declares Belief in Aliens at Venice Film Festival
During the prestigious Venice Film Festival, actress Emma Stone made headlines by openly declaring her belief in extraterrestrial life. This revelation coincides with the promotion of her upcoming film Bugonia, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his distinctive storytelling style in films like Poor Things and The Favourite. In Bugonia, Stone portrays a powerful CEO who becomes embroiled in a conspiracy led by two individuals convinced she is an alien.
Emma Stone’s Perspective on Extraterrestrial Life
When questioned about her views on aliens at the film’s press conference, the 36-year-old actress confidently stated that believing humans are the only intelligent beings in the universe is “pretty narcissistic.” She cited her admiration for Carl Sagan, the renowned astronomer and planetary scientist, who famously advocated for the possibility of life beyond Earth. “I watched his show, Cosmos, and fell madly in love with his philosophy and his science,” she remarked. Stone emphasized Sagan’s belief that the notion of human isolation in the universe is fundamentally flawed, saying, “So yes, I’m coming out with it, I believe in aliens. Thank you!”
Stone’s comments drew attention not only for their boldness but also for the playful tone she maintained while discussing the topic. When asked how she manages success without “turning into an alien,” Stone responded with a hint of mystery: “How do you know I’m not an alien?” This light-hearted exchange underscores her ability to engage with the media while promoting her film.
Exploring the Themes of Bugonia
Despite the playful banter surrounding the subject of aliens, Yorgos Lanthimos highlighted that the core themes of Bugonia resonate deeply with current societal issues. The film presents a narrative centered on a money-driven pharmaceutical CEO whose actions have dire consequences for the environment and humanity. Lanthimos explained that the “villains” of the story, who seek to thwart her plans, represent individuals striving to save the Earth from destruction.
“Humanity is facing a reckoning very soon. People need to choose the right path in many ways,” Lanthimos stated, emphasizing the film’s reflection of real-world challenges such as technological advancements, climate change, and societal desensitization to critical issues. He expressed hope that Bugonia would encourage audiences to contemplate the pressing matters affecting the globe today.
Stone’s ongoing collaboration with Lanthimos stems from her appreciation for the unique blend of humor and poignant storytelling in his films. “His movies are always funny, and moving, and f—ed up and alive,” she said, illustrating the dynamic nature of their creative partnership.
Bugonia is set to premiere in theaters on October 24, 2025, and is expected to spark discussions not only about its narrative but also about the broader themes it addresses regarding humanity’s place in the universe.
