A tragic accident claimed the life of Cole Misner, a 24-year-old father and fiancé, following a collision during a snowstorm in Ottawa last week. Misner’s vehicle rolled over around 23:30 on March 15, 2024, in the 8700 block of Bank Street near Morningside Avenue. Despite police efforts, he was found deceased beneath the snow the following morning.

Misner’s fiancé, Loraleigh Bailey, describes him as her “own personal superhero.” The couple had dreams of building a life together, including plans for a small farm where they envisioned raising children and animals. “We wanted chickens, and he wanted cows,” Bailey recalled. “He would sketch out different design plans for our future home, and we talked about it often.”

The couple relocated from Guelph to Winchester five years ago, establishing a life that was set to further flourish with their upcoming wedding this fall. “My wedding dress is hanging in my closet,” Bailey shared, reflecting on the future they had envisioned. Misner was not only a devoted partner but also an adoring father, who “would move mountains for his kids,” according to Bailey.

Last Friday, as Misner was returning home from work, a snowstorm struck. Witnesses reported severe weather conditions that evening, which may have contributed to the accident. Investigators from Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly because police were present at the scene. They are appealing for any dashcam footage or photographs from the area at the time of the accident.

Bailey recounted the moment officers arrived at her home. “The police showed up around midnight and told me that the van was in a ditch and that nobody was around,” she said. “I started frantically calling everybody we knew trying to find him.” Misner’s absence sparked a deep concern that culminated in the heartbreaking discovery the next day.

Misner’s aunt, Amanda MacDonald, expressed the family’s devastation and the overwhelming community support they have received. “The kindness of people in the community, I’m just shocked,” she stated. To assist Bailey and the couple’s two children during this difficult time, a fundraiser has been organized.

The investigation by the SIU remains ongoing, with the agency stating its goal is to conclude investigations within 120 days. As the family navigates their loss, Bailey reflects on the cherished memories they hoped to create together. “He was genuinely caring about every single person he met,” she said.

Plans are underway for two celebrations of life in honor of Misner—one in the Ottawa area and another in Guelph. As the community rallies around Bailey and her children, they continue to remember a man whose life was dedicated to his family and future.
