Filmmakers Gear Up for Mark Boscariol 48-Hour FlickFest Challenge

The Windsor International Film Festival (WIFF) has officially opened registrations for the highly anticipated Mark Boscariol 48-Hour FlickFest. This annual event invites filmmakers of all backgrounds to create a five-minute film within a tight timeframe of just 48 hours. Participants will kick off the competition on September 19, 2023, at 19:00, when they receive specific criteria, including a required character name and a prop to include in their films.
Vincent Georgie, the executive director of WIFF, emphasized that the event welcomes both novice filmmakers and seasoned veterans. “They can gather their friends and family, colleagues, anybody to try it out,” Georgie explained. Many teams participate for the first time, often using their smartphones to capture their creative visions. The festival promotes a spirit of fun, encouraging participants to explore their creativity without the pressure of formal requirements.
Georgie noted that he expects approximately 30-40 teams to take part in this year’s event, with 20-25 films likely to be showcased. Each film will be judged by industry professionals, who will select the standout entries for various awards. “There’s a ton of awards that we give out, over $2,000 of prizes for the films,” he added. Categories range from best picture and directing to special recognitions for first-time filmmakers and those engaging creatively with the event’s concepts.
The FlickFest aims to provide an inclusive platform for all aspiring filmmakers, regardless of their skill level. Georgie reiterated that anyone with a camera or a smartphone can participate. “If you want to try it out and have some fun, there’s room for that for sure,” he said. The festival embodies a lighthearted approach, allowing filmmakers to enjoy the process, whether they produce a polished final product or simply share a laugh.
For those interested in participating, registration details and additional information can be found on the WIFF website. The festival continues to celebrate the art of filmmaking, fostering creativity and community engagement across diverse skill levels.
