Fleetwood Community Festival and Movie Night Set for Sept. 6
The **Fleetwood Community Festival** returns for its 23rd year on **September 6, 2024**, promising a day of family-friendly activities at **Francis Park** outside the **Fleetwood Community Centre**. This free event, organized by the Fleetwood Community Centre and the **Fleetwood Community Association**, will run from **11:00 to 15:00**. Later in the evening, the **Fleetwood Business Improvement Association (BIA)** will host its sixth annual **Movie Night Under the Stars**, offering a film screening along with complimentary popcorn.
According to **Dean Barbour**, executive director of the Fleetwood BIA, the festival and movie night have become a cherished “end-of-summer get together.” Both events will proceed regardless of weather conditions, ensuring community members can enjoy the festivities rain or shine.
The origins of the festival date back to its inception in **1999** during the grand opening of the **Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex**. Initially, the festival included a beach party and various youth programs. Over the years, it has grown significantly, evolving into a vibrant celebration of community spirit. The festival aims to unite residents through a diverse array of booths featuring local businesses, non-profit organizations, food trucks, and live entertainment.
Barbour emphasized the importance of community connection at the festival, stating, “It’s a good opportunity to talk to people in your community and engage with different groups, including politicians and local organizations.” Notably, there will be a booth for the **Surrey Langley SkyTrain**, which has consistently attracted interest from attendees eager for updates on the project.
The event also reflects the rich tapestry of the Fleetwood community, drawing participants from various backgrounds, including the **South Asian community** and other religious groups. Barbour noted the inclusive nature of the festival, remarking, “A lot of people from different levels of government and diverse communities just come together and share in community.”
For those interested in attending, additional information can be found on the Fleetwood BIA’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/FleetwoodBIA. This festival not only marks a significant local tradition but also serves as a reminder of the importance of community engagement and celebration.
