Folklorama 2025 Launches with Vibrant Celebration in Winnipeg
The much-anticipated Folklorama 2025 officially commenced on Saturday with an energetic launch event at the Lyric Theatre and Field in Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg. This vibrant celebration marked a unique opportunity for visitors to explore all 43 pavilions and their cultural ambassadors gathered in one location.
The kick-off featured a variety of ethno-cultural performances, a dedicated children’s area, food trucks, and an engaging pavilion expo. Teresa Cotroneo, the executive director of Folklorama, expressed her enthusiasm for the festival’s evolution since it began in 1973. “It started with 21 pavilions in 1973. We’re at 43 this year. From seven days to 14 days. From 71,000 attendees to over 300,000 visits annually,” Cotroneo stated, highlighting the festival’s significant growth.
Reflecting on Folklorama’s impact on the local community, Cotroneo emphasized its importance to many Winnipeggers. “It’s something that’s really unique to Winnipeg. We’re truly part of the fabric of the community. It’s important to a lot of people — everyone has a Folklorama story,” she remarked.
The festival runs from August 3 to August 16, 2025, with pavilions located across Winnipeg. Attendees are encouraged to consult the festival’s travel guide for detailed schedules and locations. Each pavilion promises a rich cultural experience, showcasing the diversity and heritage that Folklorama celebrates.
With its lively performances and array of global cuisines, Folklorama continues to be a cherished tradition in Winnipeg, bringing together communities and fostering cultural exchange. As the festival unfolds over the next two weeks, it is set to create memorable experiences for both locals and visitors alike.
