Gogo Penguin Brings Innovative Sound to Victoria on Nov. 17
Gogo Penguin, the acclaimed jazz fusion trio from Manchester, is set to perform in Victoria on November 17, 2025, at the Royal Theatre. Known for their unique blend of jazz, electronic, and classical music, the band has garnered a reputation for redefining their genre. Their latest album, Necessary Fiction, showcases their adventurous spirit and continues to elevate their sound.
Formed in 2012, Gogo Penguin consists of pianist Chris Illingworth, double bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Jon Scott. The band has released seven studio albums, two EPs, and three live albums, establishing a significant presence in the UK and across Europe. Their music is characterized by minimalist piano melodies, driving backbeats, and powerful basslines, drawing comparisons to renowned composers like Dmitri Shostakovich and Claude Debussy.
In a recent interview, Blacka discussed the diverse influences that shape their music. “We’re from different backgrounds and each brings our own musical influences into the mix. Chris started out as a classical musician; I studied jazz double bass at Leeds College of Music, and Jon is a genius on the drums,” he explained. The band’s ability to evoke emotion without lyrics is a testament to their artistry, allowing listeners to find personal meaning in their music.
Gogo Penguin has typically created instrumental tracks, but with “Necessary Fiction,” they have ventured into new territory by collaborating with vocalist Daudi Matsiko. Blacka described Matsiko’s voice as “dark and gentle,” complementing the trio’s signature sound. This collaboration marks a significant evolution in their music, indicating a willingness to explore new creative avenues.
Victoria will kick off Gogo Penguin’s upcoming tour, which will span several cities across Canada and the United States before returning to Europe. The anticipation for their performances is palpable, especially given their reputation for captivating live shows. “Success for me is to be able to do what we’re doing. Sure, money is always a part of success, but real success is that you get to bring something to the world that you want to say,” Blacka shared, emphasizing their gratitude for the opportunity to share their music.
Tickets for the Victoria show are available through the Royal and McPherson Theatres Society website, ensuring that fans can experience the magic of Gogo Penguin live. With their innovative sound and emotional depth, the band is poised to leave a lasting impression on audiences.
For those who have yet to discover the enchanting world of Gogo Penguin, now is the perfect time to witness their artistry firsthand.
