Golden Globes 2023: What to Expect at Hollywood’s Star-Studded Night
The 83rd annual Golden Globes is set to take place on March 15, 2023, at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California. This year’s ceremony arrives amid a backdrop of political tension and uncertainty within the film industry, as Hollywood grapples with a disappointing box office year and the fate of the storied studio, Warner Bros.. The event, known for its celebratory atmosphere, faces challenges as many attendees are critical of the policies of former President Donald Trump and recent events, including the U.S. involvement in Venezuela and the tragic shooting of a mother in Minneapolis.
Despite these heavy sentiments, host Nikki Glaser has assured that the evening will prioritize entertainment over politics. In a recent statement, she expressed, “You’d be surprised that half the room had no clue why I was saying ‘Venezuela,’” highlighting the disconnect some celebrities may have from current events. Glaser, known for her roast comedy, is expected to deliver sharp humor directed at several high-profile attendees.
Viewing Details and Awards Landscape
The Golden Globes will commence at 8 p.m. EST on CBS, with streaming available for premium subscribers of Paramount+. Red carpet coverage begins at 6 p.m. EST, while the Associated Press will host a livestream starting at 4:30 p.m., featuring interviews and fashion highlights.
This year, Warner Bros. could dominate the evening, especially with its film “One Battle After Another” leading the nominations with nine nods, primarily in the musical or comedy category. The film has garnered critical acclaim and could be a major contender for the Oscars. Competing films in the drama category include Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” and Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value.”
If “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” claim the major awards, it would signify a successful night for Warner Bros., despite the studio’s uncertain future as it moves toward a potential acquisition by Netflix in a deal valued at $82.7 billion. Concerns have been raised about how this merger could negatively impact movie theaters globally.
Acting Awards and Anticipated Speeches
In the acting categories, Timothée Chalamet is favored to win his first Golden Globe after five nominations, competing in the best actor, comedy or musical category against Leonardo DiCaprio and Ethan Hawke. For best actress in a comedy or musical, Rose Byrne is the frontrunner for her role in “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.” Notably, Cynthia Erivo, another nominee, will miss the event due to her commitments in a West End production.
Jessie Buckley is a strong contender for best actress in a drama, while the best actor category features Brazilian star Wagner Moura, who could emerge victorious against Michael B. Jordan and Joel Edgerton. In supporting roles, Teyana Taylor and Stellan Skarsgård are expected to be popular picks.
The Golden Globes, previously awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, now operates under new ownership, with voting conducted by approximately 400 members. This smaller voting body can create significant momentum for Oscar campaigns, as seen last year when Demi Moore‘s emotional acceptance speech helped elevate her profile heading into the Academy Awards.
One nominee to watch is Iranian director Jafar Panahi, whose film “It Was Just an Accident” is nominated for four awards. Panahi’s unique position, having made films without government approval and facing recent legal challenges, adds a poignant narrative to the evening. His win would be particularly meaningful amid ongoing protests in Iran over economic hardships.
For the first time, the Golden Globes will also recognize excellence in podcasts. Nominees include popular shows like “Armchair Expert” and “Call Her Daddy.” In television, HBO Max’s “The White Lotus” leads with six nominations, while Netflix’s “Adolescence” follows closely with five.
This year’s ceremony promises not only glamour and recognition of artistic achievements but also a reflection of the current climate in both Hollywood and the wider world. As the stars gather, the anticipation builds for memorable moments that will define the night.
