Handyman Chases Down Package Thief in Kelowna Neighborhood
A Kelowna handyman became an unlikely hero this week when he confronted and chased down a suspected package thief in the Rutland neighbourhood. The incident, which took place on December 26, 2023, was captured on video and has since garnered significant attention.
Pavel Parviz, a general contractor with Woodex Construction, witnessed the attempted theft shortly after a delivery van dropped off a package at a home. “The delivery van just pulled over, left some packages, just pulled out, and the guy was following him,” Parviz stated. He described the suspect’s appearance as somewhat comical, likening him to a “Grinch” in the aftermath of the Christmas season.
The video footage shows the suspect swiftly grabbing a package and attempting to leave the scene. When Parviz confronted him, the man claimed ownership of the package, to which Parviz responded, “No, it’s not yours.” An altercation ensued, during which Parviz managed to wrest the package away from the thief.
Despite this initial success, the suspect fought back and regained control of the package, attempting to flee once more. Parviz, undeterred, chased him down and was able to restrain him near the road. “I ran this way, ran after him, got to restrain him over there at the road, and took the package away from him again,” he recounted.
The confrontation escalated after Parviz successfully retrieved the package. According to him, the suspect began shouting and throwing rocks before departing the area, at one point threatening, “You’re gonna get shot.” Parviz recalled, “He got out and started shouting at me, ‘gonna kill you,’ or something like that.”
In a twist of irony, Parviz was in the neighbourhood to discuss installing a secure storage box system intended to prevent such thefts. “It’s like an anti-theft box; I build it myself,” he shared. His background as a former border patrol agent in Uzbekistan contributed to his calm demeanor during the encounter. When asked if the incident frightened him, he laughed, stating, “No, I guess not.”
This incident highlights the growing concern over package theft in many communities, particularly during the holiday season. As online shopping continues to rise, so too does the risk of packages being stolen from doorsteps. Local authorities encourage residents to remain vigilant and consider implementing security measures to protect their deliveries.
Parviz’s quick thinking and determination not only ensured the safe return of the package but also brought attention to the issue of package theft in the area. His actions serve as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance in combating crime.
