Howie Mandel Hosts New Canadian Spinoff of “The Price is Right”

Howie Mandel is set to host a new Canadian version of “The Price is Right,” humorously noting that unlike tariffs on softwood lumber and steel, his services come without any duties. Titled “The Price is Right Tonight,” the show will begin production in December 2025 in Toronto and is scheduled to premiere on Citytv next spring.
The production has already opened a contestant call, inviting Canadians to apply for a chance to participate. Mandel, who was born in Toronto, acknowledges the current economic challenges Canadians face, including inflation and a rising cost of living. He emphasized the importance of connecting with contestants on a personal level, saying, “I want to know about them. I want to know what their needs are. I want to know what their struggle is right now.”
The long-running daytime television staple, originally hosted by Bob Barker and later by Drew Carey, is now being reimagined for prime time. Mandel promises a more glamorous format, allowing greater focus on contestants’ stories. “I want to know how this changes your life,” he said, reflecting on the profound impact winning can have on participants.
Mandel aims for the show to provide “pure escapism” amid global unrest and economic pressures. He stated, “At this time, a show like this… is needed more than it has ever been needed. Not only is the price right tonight, the time is right tonight.” While he could not confirm whether all prizes would be Canadian-made, he assured that the production would be authentically Canadian, saying, “I’m a Canadian in Canada doing a show with a Canadian production company on a Canadian network with Canadian contestants.”
He also addressed the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States, emphasizing a unified approach rather than a rivalry. “It’s not Canada vs. the U.S. — it’s everybody,” he remarked, adding that the divisiveness seen globally is exacerbated by social media. Mandel expressed excitement about creating a lighthearted environment where participants can momentarily escape from daily challenges.
A familiar face in the television competition landscape, Mandel is well-known for his role as a judge on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and its spinoff, “Canada’s Got Talent.” His entry into game show hosting began in 2005 with “Deal or No Deal,” which he initially turned down, considering it a step down in his career. “I said no to it, but my wife made me take it,” he recalled. The show eventually became a significant success and a highlight of his career.
With “The Price is Right Tonight,” Mandel is determined to bring a fresh and engaging experience to Canadian audiences. He assured viewers that the show would be produced “in a bigger, better way than it’s ever been done.” The rights for “The Price is Right” were acquired by Rogers Media from Fremantle, a British company that also licenses “Canada’s Got Talent” and other popular game shows.
Currently, production of “Canada’s Got Talent” has been paused, but Mandel expressed hope for its return, stating, “Canada does have talent, and I would love the opportunity to continue to showcase it.” His enthusiasm for returning to Canada and engaging with local audiences reflects his deep connection to his roots and his commitment to providing entertainment that resonates with viewers.
This report, which captures Mandel’s excitement and the significance of the upcoming show, was first published on September 30, 2025.
