Contestants on a recent episode of Jeopardy! were caught off guard when they failed to identify NHL star Leon Draisaitl‘s team, the Edmonton Oilers. During the episode aired on Tuesday, the clue read, “Leon Draisaitl stars for this northernmost (National Hockey League) team but went to warmer Spain to propose to Celeste Desjardins.” Contestant Ian Morrison, an airline ramp agent from Colorado, incorrectly guessed the Winnipeg Jets. Neither of the other contestants, hailing from Illinois and Maryland, offered a response.

Host Ken Jennings lightheartedly clarified, “Edmonton is further north,” underscoring the geographical context of the clue. The question was part of a category titled “Canadian Girlfriends,” which also featured references to notable relationships involving Canadian celebrities.

Among the other clues, one highlighted Alanis Morissette, known for her song “You Oughta Know,” rumored to be about her relationship with comedian Dave Coulier in the 1990s. Another clue focused on Rachel McAdams, who has been in a long-term relationship with American screenwriter Jamie Linden since 2016. The category also included actress Taylor Russell, who dated singer Harry Styles from 2023 to 2024.

In a separate clue worth $1,000, the answer related to the iconic character Lois Lane, famously portrayed by Margot Kidder, who dated director Brian de Palma in the early 1970s before her rise to fame.

Notably, Draisaitl recently made headlines not only for his performance on the ice but also for his personal life. He and Desjardins celebrated their marriage in France in early August, marking a significant milestone in their relationship.

With insights from CTV News Edmonton’s Evan Klippenstein, the episode showcased both the challenges of trivia and the cultural significance of Canadian sports figures. The lighthearted moment serves as a reminder of the global reach of hockey and its players, even in unexpected contexts like television game shows.
