On July 25, 2023, John Arden captivated audiences with his tribute to Billy Joel at Joanne Trattoria, located in the Upper West Side of New York City. The performance was a vibrant celebration of Joel’s music, featuring a carefully curated setlist that spanned the artist’s illustrious career.

Arden opened the show with the upbeat anthem “My Life,” quickly transitioning into the infectious “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)” and the energetic “Big Shot.” He expressed admiration for Joel’s songwriting, particularly highlighting “You’re My Home” as one of the “prettiest Billy Joel songs.” Couples in attendance enjoyed a special dedication of “She’s Got a Way,” while Arden also entertained a pregnant audience member with a lively rendition of “Baby Shark.”

Arden’s performance continued to build momentum as he led the audience in a sing-along of “Piano Man,” a highlight that resonated with the gathered fans. The show featured two acts, with Arden returning after intermission to deliver “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.” He donned a playful “Elton John” hat for renditions of “Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time)” and “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” engaging the crowd with his charisma.

“Are you guys having a good time?” he asked, to which the audience enthusiastically responded, “Hell yeah!” He acknowledged the vibrant atmosphere, declaring, “What a great night in New York City.” The evening included popular tracks such as “Crocodile Rock,” “Captain Jack,” and a unique version of Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”

Arden’s set would not be complete without the iconic “Vienna,” “Say Goodbye to Hollywood,” “Movin’ Out,” and “I Go to Extremes,” all performed with charm and energy.

Prior to the performance, Arden spoke with this journalist about his experience at Joanne Trattoria, owned by Joe Germanotta, the father of Lady Gaga. “It feels great to be here. It’s a sold-out show and the energy is great,” he said. “I always look forward to doing the great music of Billy Joel, and I am very grateful to be here.”

He described his repertoire as encompassing all the classics, stating, “From ‘New York State of Mind’ to ‘Piano Man’ to ‘She’s Got a Way,’ you name it.” Arden’s connection to Joel’s music is deeply personal. “As a piano player, I love his songwriting and the chords,” he explained. “I grew up with his music and I have always been passionate about it.”

Discussing the challenges facing artists in the digital age, Arden noted, “I am an older artist, and I don’t know much about the digital age. It may have passed me by a bit, but I have been lucky to put on great performances and I am blessed to work with world-class musicians.” His dedication to his craft remains strong, with “She’s Got a Way” and “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” listed as his favorite songs to perform live.

For aspiring artists, Arden offered valuable advice: “The biggest and best investment you can make is on yourself. Get the best equipment, and get a good PA system. Perfect your craft. Whether it’s in music or business, betting on yourself is the best investment you can make.” He expressed gratitude to his fans, saying, “I have been a big promoter of Billy Joel and Dueling Pianos. I have assembled some great musicians, and we have had continuous sold-out shows. It has been very humbling, so thank you for being a part of this ride! It has been a lot of fun.”
