Keri Russell Critiques Society’s Obsession with Women’s Appearance

Keri Russell has openly expressed her discomfort with society’s fixation on women’s appearances. In an interview with PEOPLE, the 49-year-old actress, renowned for her role in the iconic series Felicity, described this preoccupation as “weird.” Russell emphasized that discussions surrounding women’s looks are pervasive, both in public and private settings.
“It’s such a weird thing being a woman,” Russell remarked. “Everyone has an opinion about the way you look, the way you dress, the way your hair is. It’s just the nature of our society.” This sentiment highlights the pressure many women face regarding their image, a reality Russell acknowledges despite her frustrations.
She noted that even among her friends, conversations about appearance are common. Russell pointed out the increasing normalization of cosmetic procedures across various demographics, stating, “Plastic surgery is having such a moment right now—men, women, 20-year-olds.” She commented on the impact of celebrity culture, observing that many stars, regardless of age, often appear remarkably youthful. “We’re inundated with these movie stars. Even though they might be 50 or 60 years old, they look amazing,” she added.
Role in ‘The Diplomat’ Offers New Perspective
Currently, Russell stars as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler in the Netflix drama The Diplomat. This character provides a refreshing change, as she is portrayed as a woman less focused on her looks. “I find it really enjoyable. I like how cranky she is about it, and how she’s always trying to fight people about it,” Russell explained.
Reflecting on her role, she admitted, “I watch this show and I’m like, I do not look like that, you know. I like the way I look on the show, and it’s amazing that I feel like that’s strange, like that’s a unique thing to look like that—but it is.”
Russell, who has been a prominent figure in television and film for years, acknowledges that public scrutiny surrounding appearance is an inescapable aspect of being in the spotlight. Yet, her current role allows her to engage with themes of diplomacy and leadership, moving beyond the narrow focus on physical appearance.
In summarizing her thoughts, Russell underscores that while societal expectations regarding looks can be overwhelming, her latest character offers a significant departure from these norms, allowing for a more profound exploration of identity and purpose.
