Langley Performer Takes the Stage as Gabriella in ‘High School Musical’
Marija Danyluk, a talented performer from Langley, will portray Gabriella in the upcoming production of “High School Musical” at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby from January 23 to February 7, 2026. This role marks a significant moment in Danyluk’s career, bringing her childhood dreams full circle after meeting stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens at the age of 10.
Danyluk recalls her youthful encounter with Efron and Hudgens, who played Troy and Gabriella in the film series. “I could barely speak to them because I was so nervous,” she shared, reflecting on her early passion for the musical. Now, she is set to take the stage in a role that has held deep personal significance for her throughout her life.
The Langley City resident has always been drawn to performance, having once brought a costume change to her elementary school to perform songs from “High School Musical” during lunch breaks. “Looking back, I can’t believe the unapologetic bravery that I had,” she noted. “Anyone who saw me perform would say it’s no surprise I became an actor.”
Joining Danyluk on stage will be her real-life boyfriend, Matthew Valinho, who plays Troy. Reflecting on their unique connection, Danyluk joked, “Fifteen years later, I am technically dating Troy Bolton, onstage and off. Younger me would be thrilled to know this is how her story goes.”
In addition to her acting career, Danyluk is passionate about drawing, writing, and music. She emphasizes the importance of being proactive in her creativity, stating, “I believe it’s crucial to be a creative that doesn’t wait on opportunities.” Despite her success, she admits that nerves still accompany her performances. “I’ve definitely had to learn how to control them in order to do the job well,” she explained.
Danyluk’s interest in psychology has informed her approach to managing performance anxiety. She advocates for mental health awareness among actors, particularly young performers. “I’ve always said that I would be a therapist if I wasn’t an actor. We are told to have a thick skin, but no one really teaches you how,” she said. To address this gap, she has begun using social media to share strategies for resilience in the face of the industry’s challenges.
Preparations for the musical began in November, and this will be Danyluk’s first performance with Align Entertainment. She graduated from Capilano University’s Musical Theatre Program in 2020 and has since navigated the challenges of the performing arts landscape, particularly during the pandemic. “The adjustment to ‘real life’ after graduation can be rocky,” she remarked, recalling her first post-COVID performance at Theatre Under the Stars in 2022.
Danyluk’s journey back to the stage has included a variety of roles, including work as an actor for police training and medical students. She has embraced the message of “High School Musical” in her own life—“follow your passions, create your own path, and allow yourself to be more than just one thing.” This philosophy remains a guiding force as she continues to pursue her career in the performing arts.
As she prepares for this milestone production, Danyluk looks forward to reconnecting with her roots and the joy of performance. “Being a part of this show has brought me back to that little girl who would take any chance to sing on stage,” she said. “It’s a great reminder for me moving forward.”
