The celebrated musical, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, is captivating audiences at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium through January 18, 2024. Based on the acclaimed 2001 film by Baz Luhrmann, this theatrical production has garnered attention for its vibrant storytelling and exceptional performances, winning 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Directed by Alex Timbers, the show unfolds in the lavish setting of Paris’s iconic cabaret and is filled with romance, heartbreak, and a rich tapestry of music. The narrative follows an American songwriter named Christian, portrayed by Ryan Vasquez, who arrives in Paris with dreams of success. He becomes entwined with the star performer of the Moulin Rouge, Satine, played by Gabriela Carrillo, who is facing her own dire circumstances.

The opening act introduces a lively atmosphere as Christian meets artists Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, portrayed by Kevyn Morrow, and Santiago, played by Daniel Burgos. Together, they are crafting a show for the Moulin Rouge, seeking a catchy song to captivate the audience. Meanwhile, Satine’s precarious situation complicates matters; she must charm the wealthy Duke of Monroth to save the cabaret from financial ruin.

Set against the backdrop of Paris’s 18th arrondissement, the production immerses viewers in the bohemian spirit of the time. The vibrant set design by Derek McLane creates a visually stunning experience, showcasing the allure of the cabaret and its lively streets. The choreography by Sonya Tayeh enhances this aesthetic, with can-can dancers opening the show in a spectacular display of energy and grace.

As a jukebox musical, Moulin Rouge! cleverly intertwines various popular songs, including hits from Beyoncé, Adele, and Lady Gaga. This eclectic mix not only entertains but also captures the essence of love and longing. The poignant ballads, particularly Elton John’s “Your Song,” resonate deeply, adding emotional weight to the narrative.

The production excels in its use of music to propel the story forward. A standout moment occurs when Toulouse-Lautrec encourages Christian to pursue his feelings for Satine, performing “Nature Boy,” a classic that emphasizes the timeless message of love.

Despite its familiar storyline, Moulin Rouge! The Musical thrives on its innovative approach and the clever integration of beloved songs. The ensemble cast delivers a dynamic performance, showcasing their talents and ensuring that the show captivates audiences from start to finish.

Presented by Broadway Across Canada, Moulin Rouge! The Musical continues to enchant spectators in Edmonton. Tickets are available starting at $60 through ticketmaster.ca or at the box office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. As the production runs until mid-January, it promises to be an unforgettable experience for theatre lovers.
