In a significant move for sports broadcasting in Japan, Netflix has acquired the media rights to stream the 2026 World Baseball Classic. This marks the first occasion the platform will offer a live event in Japan, expanding its portfolio in the sports arena.

The tournament will feature a total of 47 games, with Team Japan competing as the defending champion after their thrilling victory in the 2023 edition. In a memorable final held in Miami, Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani secured the championship by striking out American slugger Mike Trout, leading to a 3-2 triumph.

Details of the Tournament

The upcoming World Baseball Classic will be the sixth edition of the tournament and is scheduled to take place from March 5, 2026 to March 17, 2026. The event will feature 20 teams competing across four first-round pools located in Tokyo, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Houston, and Miami.

Previously, the Japanese media rights were held by a consortium of media companies, including Amazon Prime Video, during the last World Baseball Classic. The acquisition by Netflix signals a strategic move to enhance its offerings in live sports, appealing to a growing audience of baseball fans in Japan and beyond.

In addition to the World Baseball Classic, Netflix is expected to be a contender for broadcasting the Home Run Derby in the United States. Major League Baseball is exploring options for a three-year deal starting next year, indicating a potential shift in the landscape of sports media rights.

As streaming platforms continue to compete for high-profile sports events, Netflix‘s entry into live sports streaming in Japan could reshape viewer engagement and access to major sporting events in the region.
