Powerful Production ‘She’ Illuminates Impact of Partner Violence
A compelling theatre production titled She will return to the stage this September, aiming to shed light on the experiences of women affected by intimate partner violence (IPV). Written by Sarah Skagen, the performance art piece brings together the voices of 24 women, illustrating the often misunderstood trauma that IPV inflicts on individuals and society as a whole.
The ensemble cast features numerous first-time performers, each infusing the production with raw emotion and strength. Under Skagen’s direction, the cast includes talented individuals such as Abigail Carr, Burgandy Hill, Chelsey Lesage, and Vicky-Lynn Behnke. A press release highlights the dedication of each actor, stating, “Each actor approaches this work with deep care and integrity, lending their voices and presence to stories that are too often silenced.” This commitment allows the cast to embody the weight and complexity of the experiences shared in She.
Creative Team Behind the Production
The creative team is led by Skagen, who serves as both director and producer. Randi Houston-Jones assists as the director, while Cindy Ougler takes on the role of stage manager. The production’s visual elements include lighting design by Rob Rock and sound design by Shane Erickson. Elizabeth Morris-Moran contributes as both set and art designer, with Marc Laporte providing backstage support.
“This dedicated team has worked tirelessly to build a performance space that feels both safe and raw,” the release states. “A place where silence is broken, stories are shared, and healing can begin.” The production is described as a reckoning and a collective scream that brings marginalized voices to the forefront.
Exploring the Depth of Abuse
Through a combination of monologue, movement, and multimedia, She delves into the cycles of abuse, the isolation faced by victims, and the resilience required to survive. The production aims to foster understanding and empathy among audiences. “After witnessing this performance, you will have new insight for those who surround you,” the release suggests. “You’ll ask yourself daily, ‘If at least one out of every four women is a victim of IPV, who is She?’”
Performances will take place from September 17-20, 2023, at the Sault Theatre Workshop, located at 121 Pittsburgh Ave. Showtimes are set for 19:00 each evening.
