Pup Takes Vancouver by Storm with Three Electrifying Shows
Canadian band Pup is set to electrify Vancouver with three performances this November, celebrating the release of their latest album, Who Will Look After the Dogs? The Toronto quartet will kick off their shows at the Pearl on November 24, 2023, featuring a special guest appearance by Juno-winning Indigenous rap duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids. Following this all-ages event, Pup will headline two shows at the Commodore Ballroom on November 25 and November 26.
Since their self-titled debut in 2012, Pup has garnered significant attention and a dedicated fanbase, thanks to their relentless touring and performances at major music festivals, including Lollapalooza and the Vans Warped Tour. Their recent tour opening for Ontario pop-punk band Sum 41 showcased their increasing popularity, with many shows selling out across North America.
The band’s new album, which was released on May 2, 2023, showcases their distinctive blend of post-hardcore and heavy rock. One standout track, “Olive Garden,” began as a simple acoustic piece penned by frontman Stefan Babcock, but evolved into a heavier composition that reflects the band’s signature style. Babcock describes the song as a mix of “catchy and fun” with underlying themes of discomfort and chaos, highlighting their unique musical approach.
In a recent interview, Babcock shared insights into the creation of Who Will Look After the Dogs? He revealed that the title was inspired by a lyric from the track “Hallways,” which he wrote during a challenging time. He emphasized the duality of humor and heartbreak present in their music, a hallmark of Pup’s identity.
When discussing their musical journey, Babcock expressed pride in the band’s accomplishments, stating, “I’m very proud, lucky and fortunate to have this position of being in this band.” He acknowledged the pressures of the industry and the constant evolution they face, indicating that their growth is ongoing.
The decision to collaborate with producer John Congleton for this album marked a significant shift for the band. Babcock noted that their previous producer, Dave Schiffman, had been integral to their earlier works, but they sought to explore new creative avenues with Congleton, whose extensive experience with notable indie artists made him an ideal choice.
As the anticipation builds for their Vancouver shows, Babcock stated, “If you don’t like the records, the live show isn’t likely to win you over.” He believes that their energetic performances resonate most with fans who appreciate their recorded music, promising an engaging experience for concertgoers.
With their upcoming concerts, Pup continues to solidify their place in the music scene, and their dynamic live performances are sure to leave an impact on both long-time fans and new listeners alike. As they prepare to take the stage, the excitement surrounding Pup’s Vancouver shows underscores their commitment to delivering high-energy, memorable experiences for all.
