Purity Ring Releases New Self-Titled Album After Pandemic Pause

The Canadian duo Purity Ring has made a notable return with their self-titled fourth album, which launched on October 6, 2023. Comprising multi-instrumentalist and producer Corin Roddick and vocalist Megan James, the group drew inspiration from their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic to create a cohesive musical narrative.
During the early pandemic, Roddick and James found themselves with unexpected free time due to multiple tour cancellations. “We had multiple tours cancelled and needed a way to deal with it,” Roddick explained. Their solution? Immersing themselves in video games, particularly role-playing games (RPGs) like Final Fantasy. This influence played a significant role in the development of their new album, as they began to conceive it not merely as a collection of songs, but as a concept album with a distinct storyline.
The creative process began with the song “Relict,” which Roddick felt was a clear opener for the album. “Then the second song we wrote was ‘Glacier,’ and we’re like, this feels like a perfect closure,” he noted. This was a new experience for the duo, as they had never before structured an album around a defined beginning and end. The resulting project serves as a narrative journey, exploring themes of transformation and personal growth through the avatars of James and Roddick.
Exploring New Musical Landscapes
The album showcases a wide range of sounds, blending elements of pop with influences from Japanese anime and ambient gaming soundscapes. Tracks like “Red the Sunrise” evoke nostalgic imagery, while “Place of My Own” delivers a pulsating energy reminiscent of rave culture. The song “imanocean” introduces an interlude-like experience, described by James as an “accidental channel change” that offers listeners a different perspective on their music.
Purity Ring has established a reputation for their innovative approach, frequently defying genre classifications. Their ethereal sound, characterized by James’ haunting vocals and Roddick’s intricate production, has allowed them to carve out a unique identity in the music industry. Since their debut with “Ungirthed” in 2011, the duo has consistently evolved while remaining true to their artistic vision.
The band’s journey began in Edmonton, but they later relocated to Los Angeles. After signing with 4AD and Last Gang Records, they gained significant attention, charting on the Billboard rankings with their 2012 release, “Shrines.” Collaborations with artists such as rapper Danny Brown and pop sensation Katy Perry further showcased their versatility, yet they have maintained a commitment to their original sound.
Independent Spirit and Touring Plans
Notably, Purity Ring operates as a self-contained unit, handling their own production and creative direction. This independence allows them to maintain authenticity, distancing themselves from the demands of the music industry. Roddick remarked, “We do pretty much everything we possibly can do ourselves.” This choice, however, limits their engagement with social media and fan interactions, which some perceive as an air of mystery around the duo.
James added that their approach serves as a form of resistance against the pressures faced by artists in the current era. “We’re just people. We’re not calculating all the ways that we can get the most numbers, like major artists or major labels might do,” she said.
As Purity Ring prepares for a 30-day tour across America, starting mid-October, fans are eager to see how their new material translates to the stage. While there are currently no plans for a Canadian tour that would bring them back to their roots, Roddick assures audiences that they remain committed to performing their most beloved tracks. “For the most part we perform the songs we’re most proud of in their sort of original sound,” he stated, emphasizing their intention to honor the essence of their earlier work.
As they navigate this new chapter in their musical journey, Purity Ring continues to captivate listeners with their innovative sound and unwavering dedication to artistry.
