Rivalry and Laughter Ignite in Shuswap Theatre’s Ripcord
Shuswap Theatre is set to captivate audiences with its upcoming production of Ripcord, a comedy by acclaimed American playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. The play opens on February 20, 2024, and runs through to March 8, 2024, promising an entertaining blend of humor and drama.
The story unfolds in a sunny room within the Bristol Place Senior Living facility, where a contentious battle ensues between two residents. Abby, known for her cantankerous demeanor, is forced to share her space with the annoyingly cheerful newcomer, Marilyn. This unlikely duo’s rivalry escalates from a seemingly harmless bet into a series of increasingly outrageous tricks, revealing hidden truths about both women.
Director Laura Demulder describes Ripcord as more than just a comedy. “It takes the audience on outrageous adventures through the lives of these women and their families,” she said. While the dialogue sparkles with sharp wit, Demulder emphasizes that the play delves into deeper themes, addressing grief, aging, and the complexities of personal history.
Demulder, who transitioned from a teaching career to theatre after retiring to the Shuswap region, has embraced her passion for the stage. Since joining Shuswap Theatre in 2022, she has contributed to several productions, including The Thirty-Nine Steps and Treasure Island. “It’s been a great experience; people have been welcoming,” she noted, reflecting on her journey from set-building to directing.
The production features a cast of six actors, three of whom will portray multiple roles, showcasing the versatility and talent within the group. The play aims to create an immersive experience for the audience, incorporating innovative use of light, sound, and set design to transport viewers beyond the confines of the senior living facility.
Opening night will include a gala event, and patrons can take advantage of a special “Pay What You Choose” performance on March 5, 2024. Evening shows begin at 19:30, with a Sunday matinee at 13:30. Tickets can be purchased online at shuswaptheatre.com or at Choose Refill, conveniently located near Boston Pizza and Wendy’s.
“This is a comedy, but there is drama and it’s absurd; it’s a look at age and exploring life to its fullest,”
Demulder explained. The play is rated PG-13 due to its language and mature themes, making it suitable for older teens and adults.
As excitement builds for the opening of Ripcord, Shuswap Theatre continues to enrich the local cultural scene, inviting audiences to experience humor and heartfelt moments through the lens of age and rivalry.
