Sault Theatre Implements Stricter Vetting After Comedy Show Cancellation

The Sault Community Theatre Centre has announced plans to enhance its vetting process for performances following the cancellation of a comedy show featuring Ben Bankas. This decision comes after local Indigenous leader Karen Bell expressed her opposition to Bankas’s performance, citing his jokes about Indigenous culture and residential schools as “inaccurate” and “crude.” The show, originally scheduled for March 6, 2024, was cancelled to address community concerns.

In light of the controversy, the theatre’s board, led by Christopher Rous, acknowledged the need for a more rigorous review of third-party programming. “What occurred has shed light on the need to vet third-party programming with greater vigour to ensure we have appropriate and sufficient guidelines in place,” Rous stated. He emphasized the board’s commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future, expressing regret over the cancellation.

The Sault Community Theatre Centre primarily hosts local groups, with about one-third of its bookings coming from out-of-town performances. Many of these shows travel on a national or international scale. Rous noted that the cancelled event fell into this category. “There are only a finite number of promoters, so in most cases, the promoters and/or the performances are known entities,” he explained.

Despite this familiarity, Rous recognized that the existing vetting process was insufficient. “We use the performance content descriptions in addition to any promotional materials sent to us at the time of the booking request. Clearly, this wasn’t sufficient, and we recognize that,” he said.

This cancellation marks a significant moment for the theatre, as Rous indicated it was the first show the venue has had to cancel. When asked about possible compensation for Bankas or the promoter, Rous noted that the theatre is reviewing its documentation and will work towards a resolution. “While I can’t speak to a specific cancellation fee, we are committed to resolving this situation appropriately,” he said.

The incident highlights the delicate balance that cultural venues must navigate when programming performances that may evoke strong reactions. The Sault Community Theatre Centre’s proactive approach signals a broader trend in the entertainment industry to prioritize community sensitivities while ensuring diverse programming. As the theatre implements these changes, it aims to foster an inclusive environment that respects all perspectives.
