Social Media Breakups: The Impact of Oversharing Emotions
The phenomenon of oversharing emotions, particularly in the aftermath of a breakup, has gained significant traction online. Recent data reveals over 125,000 posts on TikTok alone addressing the topic of breakups, reflecting a growing trend where individuals publicly express their emotional pain. According to Charisse Cooke, a psychotherapist and relationship expert at the dating app Flirtini, discussions about oversharing have surged, with Google searches for the phrase “is oversharing bad” increasing by 614% this year.
Cooke explains that people often share their emotional struggles to help regulate their nervous systems and make sense of their experiences. “When people overshare their emotional pain, be it online or in person with a friend, they’re trying to manage what they’re feeling,” she told the Toronto Sun. Although sharing can foster healing, there are moments when it can become overwhelming for both the sharer and the audience.
Understanding the Benefits of Oversharing
Oversharing can serve as a tool for narrative processing. Talking about distress engages the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain that helps integrate emotions and memories, according to Cooke. Following a breakup, the body often reacts with a stress response, which can lead to elevated levels of cortisol. In this context, oversharing can provide a mechanism for regulating these heightened emotions.
Cooke notes that expressive writing and public sharing can decrease heart rate and blood pressure. This process can be particularly beneficial for those who find it challenging to process emotions internally. “Humans regulate emotions through connection,” she explains. “Digital empathy and parasocial relationships can mimic that effect, offering a sense of support.”
The Risks of Oversharing
While there are advantages, oversharing can also have its drawbacks. Cooke emphasizes that supportive feedback can calm the nervous system, but only if the shared experiences feel authentic. “If you tailor what you share to elicit a specific reaction, or overshare impulsively, you may inadvertently increase your own stress,” she warns. This impulsive sharing can lead to an exaggerated sense of tragedy and heightened emotional turmoil.
Moreover, relying too heavily on oversharing can provide only temporary relief without fostering long-term resilience. “It gives temporary relief but doesn’t build internal resilience to emotional problems,” Cooke adds. Therefore, while sharing may feel beneficial, it is critical to strike a balance that promotes healthy emotional processing.
Finding Empowerment Through Sharing
Cooke also highlights the role of shame in the oversharing process. By bringing painful experiences into the open, individuals often seek acceptance and validation. “Shame loses power when it’s brought into the open,” she states. For many, the aftermath of a breakup can leave them feeling powerless, and sharing their stories publicly can help restore a sense of agency.
“Sharing allows individuals to author their own narrative,” Cooke explains. This sense of control is crucial for recovery and can significantly aid emotional healing.
As societal norms around sharing personal experiences continue to evolve, the conversation around the effects of oversharing remains vital. Understanding both the benefits and risks can help individuals navigate their emotional landscapes more effectively, allowing for healthier expressions of pain and growth.
