Sofia Vergara Hospitalized, Misses Emmy Awards After Allergy Attack

Actress Sofia Vergara was unable to attend the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on September 17, 2023, due to a sudden allergic reaction that required hospitalization. The 53-year-old star was in the process of getting ready for the prestigious event at the Peacock Theater when she experienced the reaction, prompting her to seek emergency medical attention instead.
In a candid Instagram update, Vergara shared a photo that revealed her swollen left eye. She wrote, “Didn’t make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER … Sorry I had to cancel! Craziest eye [allergy] right before getting in the car!” Along with the post, she included a video of herself rinsing her eye at a water fountain, highlighting the unexpected nature of her condition.
Notable Absences and Award Highlights
Vergara was slated to present an award during the ceremony, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze. The night also saw the absence of actor Eric Dane, known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, who had previously announced his diagnosis of ALS in April 2023. Dane indicated this event could mark a significant return to public appearances following his interview with Good Morning America earlier this summer.
Despite these notable absences, the Emmy Awards celebrated several major achievements. Noah Wyle’s series The Pitt was honored as Outstanding Drama Series, while Seth Rogen’s The Studio on Apple TV Plus garnered multiple awards in the comedy categories. British drama Adolescence, featuring Stephen Graham, also secured victories during the night.
While Vergara has not provided additional updates on her health, her social media posts suggest that the allergic reaction was both severe and unexpected. The incident underscores the unpredictability of health events, even during significant moments such as the Emmy Awards.
With a mixture of excitement and concern, fans and fellow stars alike expressed their support for Vergara, wishing her a swift recovery. The evening, although marked by some absences, still showcased the remarkable talent within the industry and celebrated the achievements of various productions.
