South Surrey’s Urban Safari Unveils Nocturnal Creatures for Halloween
In a unique celebration of Halloween, the Urban Safari Rescue Society in South Surrey will host an event titled “Urban Safari After Dark.” Over three nights—October 25, 29, and 30, 2023—the reptile rescue centre will transform into a kid-friendly haunted house, showcasing its nocturnal residents.
From 16:00 to 20:00 on these dates, families are invited to explore the centre at 1395 176 St. and encounter animals that are typically hidden during the day. The society’s latest newsletter encourages visitors to join for a “spooking fun time with animals.”
Experience Nocturnal Wildlife
During the event, guests can expect to see a variety of animals, including sugargliders, lizards, chinchillas, and snakes, which will be more active than usual due to the evening hours. Notably, a snake-feeding demonstration is set for October 29, offering an exciting glimpse into the feeding habits of these creatures.
Executive Director Sharon Doucette reassured potential attendees that while the environment will embrace the Halloween spirit with dim lighting and themed decor, there will be “no jump scares or gory setups.”
The Urban Safari Rescue Society, dedicated to the rescue and sanctuary of exotic animals, is home to around 200 species. The centre faced significant challenges after a fire in late January 2023 resulted in extensive damage and the loss of approximately 75 animals. Remarkably, October 27 marks the one-year anniversary of the facility’s reopening, during which it has made substantial improvements.
Resilience and Community Engagement
Doucette noted that the two-year closure, although difficult, ultimately allowed for enhancements that improved both the facility and the lives of the animals. The time off enabled staff to re-evaluate enclosures and implement better designs.
The rescue centre is now receiving regular inquiries from individuals looking to rehome exotic pets. Doucette stated that the facility’s capacity “depends on the species and needs,” emphasizing a commitment to doing the best they can for the animals in their care.
Attendees are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes, as those who do will receive a small token of appreciation from the centre. Regular admission rates apply: $15 for adults, $10 for children, students, or seniors, and free entry for children aged three and younger.
For more information about the event, interested individuals can call 604-531-1100, email [email protected], or visit the Urban Safari website at urbansafari.ca. This event promises to be a unique and engaging way for families to celebrate Halloween while supporting a vital community resource.
