Squamish Musician Samantha Sinanan Releases Debut Album
Musician Samantha Sinanan is set to launch her debut full-length album, Will You Think of Me, on December 1, 2023. The album showcases her journey as a songwriter, marking a significant step forward from her previous work with the band Bluesberry Jam, where she has been a vocalist for nearly a decade.
Sinanan’s new project, Cowgirl Lovebrand, draws inspiration from a blend of folk, blues, and country. The name is a nod to her admiration for legendary artist Neil Young and his song “Cowgirl in the Sand.” She describes this album as a “community effort,” recorded in Squamish with the backing of local musicians and friends.
The musician credits major life changes and the unwavering support of the Squamish community for her newfound direction. “I’ve been able to tap into something more real,” Sinanan explained. She acknowledged that in the past, she wasn’t ready to fully express her story through music.
Sinanan’s musical journey began at the age of six when she started singing in choirs. With a strong foundation in classical training, she was inspired by artists such as Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon. Although she initially focused on her voice, she later taught herself to play guitar, aiming to accompany her singing.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sinanan found herself in a period of reflection, which reignited her passion for songwriting. “I was ready to take a deeper dive and try it in a more authentic way,” she noted. This shift allowed her to explore storytelling in her music, a facet she felt was missing in her earlier attempts.
Collaborative Spirit in Songwriting
Sinanan’s songwriting process is deeply collaborative, particularly with her partner, Antti Makitalo, who serves as both co-writer and editor for her music. Together, they crafted the song “Midnight Sun,” which illustrates their creative synergy. Sinanan typically develops the lyrics and music, while Makitalo contributes with guitar solos and valuable feedback.
When asked about her songwriting technique, Sinanan compared it to assembling a puzzle. Inspiration can strike from various sources, whether it begins with a chord progression or a catchy hook. “They come in different orders… sometimes I’ll get inspiration to rearrange the pieces,” she explained.
Success for Sinanan is measured by the joy her music brings to listeners. She emphasizes the importance of relatability in her songwriting, aiming to connect with her audience without compromising her authentic voice. “Simplicity is one of the keys to dial it back,” she stated.
Musical Inspirations and Future Aspirations
Many of Sinanan’s songs reflect her experiences from her travels, with tracks inspired by her relationships in Morocco and the landscapes of Finland. Her song “Moroccan Lovesong” and another titled “Thunder” encapsulate these diverse influences, showcasing her ability to weave personal narratives into her music.
As she prepares for the release of Will You Think of Me, Sinanan remains focused on her roots in Squamish while embracing her evolving artistry. “These projects can all happen in tandem,” she affirmed, highlighting her commitment to nurturing both her solo career and her engagement with the local music community.
With her debut album set to reach listeners on streaming platforms, Samantha Sinanan is poised to make a significant impact in the music scene, driven by a passion for storytelling and a deep connection to her community.
