Surrey Writers Collaborate to Illuminate Postpartum Struggles

Surrey-based writer Christina Myers and co-editor Oga Nwobosi have launched a new book titled Beyond Blue, which addresses the often-overlooked challenges of postpartum depression. This compilation features narratives from twenty-six writers across Canada, sharing their personal experiences with mental health following childbirth. The book aims to foster understanding and support for those affected by postpartum issues, providing a platform for stories of heartbreak, healing, and hope.
Myers and Nwobosi first connected in a postpartum support group nearly two decades ago, shortly after the births of their first children. Their shared experiences and ongoing friendship led them to co-create this insightful collection, which was published by Caitlin Press in 2023. Spanning 174 pages, Beyond Blue offers a candid exploration of the psychological impacts many mothers face, extending beyond the commonly recognized “baby blues.”
The book addresses a significant concern: a large number of mothers suffer from postpartum depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues that often remain undiagnosed. According to the introduction on the Caitlin Press website, these conditions are frequently compounded by societal stigma, embarrassment, and limited access to resources.
In her contribution titled “Laundry Day,” Myers recounts her own struggles, depicting a conversation with herself as she navigates her mental state. She writes, “You haven’t eaten in ages. You’ll never be thin, not you, but you’ve lost so much weight — baby weight and then some extra, and people are starting to notice.” Her poignant reflections emphasize the disconnect between societal perceptions of success and the invisible battles many face in silence.
The book is priced at $26 and is available for purchase on the Caitlin Press website. To celebrate the launch, a special event is scheduled for October 18, 2023, at the Canadian Memorial Centre for Peace in Vancouver. This gathering aims to raise awareness and foster community dialogue about postpartum mental health, encouraging attendees to share their own experiences.
Through Beyond Blue, Myers and Nwobosi hope to break the silence surrounding postpartum mental health issues and cultivate a sense of empowerment among mothers. The collection serves as a reminder that, while the journey may be challenging, support and understanding are essential components of healing.
