Terry Fox’s Family Celebrates 45 Years of Hope and Fundraising

On September 14, 2023, family members of the late Terry Fox reflect on his enduring legacy as they commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. Fox began this monumental journey in April 1980, aiming to raise funds for cancer research after losing his right leg to the disease. His inspiring run, which started in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, was tragically halted just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, in September 1980 when cancer spread to his lungs. He passed away in June 1981, but the movement he initiated has since raised over $900 million for cancer research.

The annual Terry Fox Run takes place across Canada, with particular enthusiasm in Victoria, where record-breaking donations are expected this year. Organizers, including Darren Wark, Terry’s cousin, predict contributions could reach $100,000 by the end of the event. Wark, who was only 11 years old when the Marathon of Hope began, expresses pride in continuing his cousin’s mission.

“I think the story of Terry resonates with everybody. We’ve all got a story related to cancer,” Wark said. He noted that the Victoria run is among the top 20 fundraisers in the country, showcasing the community’s commitment.

Kirsten Fox, Terry’s niece and director of community development for British Columbia and Yukon at the foundation, acknowledges the impact of her uncle’s legacy. Although she was not alive during his run, she has been inspired by the stories of his bravery and determination.

“As a young person to know research was going to be the answer to hopefully solving cancer was so innovative,” she explained. Kirsten highlighted Terry’s unique motivation, recognizing that at the time, cancer was a topic often avoided in conversations, and research efforts were minimal.

The Terry Fox Run in Victoria is set to begin at 10:00 AM at Beacon Hill Park. This event, along with more than 600 community runs across Canada each year, continues to foster awareness and support for cancer research, embodying the spirit of Terry Fox’s original vision.

As participants gather in Victoria, they not only honor Terry Fox’s memory but also contribute to a cause that affects millions. His “never give up” attitude continues to inspire individuals and families touched by cancer, reinforcing the importance of ongoing research and funding in the fight against this disease.
