Toronto Honors Guillermo del Toro with Key to the City

In a ceremonial event on July 24, 2025, Toronto recognized acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro by presenting him with the key to the city. This gesture acknowledges del Toro’s significant contributions to the local film industry and his longstanding connection to the city.
During the presentation at Cinespace Studios, Toronto’s Mayor Olivia Chow praised del Toro’s impact on the local economy, noting that his filmmaking endeavors have created numerous jobs and bolstered the city’s screen industry. “His history of producing films in Toronto is a testament to the city’s potential as a vibrant hub for cinema,” Chow remarked.
Del Toro’s Toronto Legacy
In his acceptance speech, del Toro expressed his deep affection for Toronto, stating, “I have loved Toronto for so many years and I am very happy that it loves me back.” He described the city as “the best place to make movies,” highlighting its supportive environment for filmmakers. Over the course of his nearly 30-year career, del Toro has spent approximately half of that time working in Toronto, directing major films such as Pacific Rim (2013) and the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water (2017).
The event also marked a special tribute, as Cinespace Studios announced the renaming of four sound stages in honor of del Toro. This initiative aims to celebrate his artistic achievements and contributions to the film community.
Upcoming Projects and Future Endeavors
Del Toro is set to release his next film, Frankenstein, which is currently in production at Company 3, a Toronto-based video production studio. The film will feature Jacob Elordi in the titular role and is slated for debut at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.
Reflecting on the city’s cultural significance, del Toro noted, “Toronto does not only exist as a great city for making film, but for celebrating film.” His words resonate with the local community that prides itself on fostering creativity and innovation in the arts.
This report was initially published by The Canadian Press and captures the essence of a filmmaker’s journey intertwined with the rich cinematic landscape of Toronto.
