Vancouver Folk Music Festival Celebrates 48th Year at Jericho Beach

The Vancouver Folk Music Festival (VFMF) has made its return to Jericho Beach, commencing its 48th annual celebration on Friday. The festival features three stages, showcasing a total of 32 performances and 12 artist workshops, creating an engaging environment for music lovers.
Community Connection Amid Economic Challenges
Artistic Director Fiona Black emphasizes the importance of the festival as a community gathering place, especially during challenging economic times. “I think it’s a real touchstone. For a lot of Vancouverites, it’s part of our identity. You go there to see friends that you haven’t seen maybe for almost a year. It’s a comfort. It’s just needed in today’s world,” Black stated.
The VFMF distinguishes itself from larger festivals by focusing on emerging artists rather than big-name headliners. “We’re never going to be Coachella. We are of the people. I’m really proud of the quality of artists that we’re able to get, and the talent in the world that want to come to our festival,” Black added. She noted the festival’s longstanding reputation and its picturesque setting at Jericho Beach Park.
In 2023, the festival faced cancellation due to escalating costs associated with its production. Following a successful fundraising drive and a grant from the provincial government, the event returned, although financial pressures remain. Black acknowledged that rising costs continue to challenge the festival’s operations, yet she remains optimistic about its future.
Festival Schedule and Lineup
“Even in these really incredibly weird and challenging economic times that we’re in right now, we have a really good team. This is my third edition. I feel like I’m getting stronger and getting to know the festival better and better every year,” Black remarked.
Gates opened on Friday at 14:00 and will remain open until 22:00. Performances continue throughout the weekend, with shows running from 10:00 to 23:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. A complete lineup of artists can be found on the festival’s official website, providing attendees with a comprehensive look at the diverse array of talent on display.
The VFMF not only highlights the resilience of the arts community in Vancouver but also serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural events in fostering connections and providing solace during difficult times.
