Vancouver Media Pioneer Jennifer Smith Elevates Storytelling
Jennifer Smith, a prominent media entrepreneur based in Vancouver, has dedicated her career to shedding light on important stories. Since her initial foray into entrepreneurship with the launch of CTV Vancouver in 1997, she has established herself as a leading figure in the Canadian media landscape. With a focus on innovation and social responsibility, Smith has transformed several media ventures across the country.
Having previously worked with Rogers Radio and Standard Radio, Smith joined the startup team of CTV Vancouver, known initially as VTV. This independent television station marked a significant milestone as the first of its kind to launch in Vancouver in 28 years. Reflecting on that experience, Smith stated, “It was an incredible feeling… you could feel it everywhere.” This adrenaline-fueled beginning set the stage for her future successes.
Over the years, Smith has been instrumental in the creation of groundbreaking media initiatives. She secured a broadcast license for the world’s first gay television network, OutTV, co-founded The Beat 94.5, Western Canada’s first urban radio station, and led the national commercial launch of CBC Radio 2. Through her involvement in six startups and numerous media ventures, she has built a reputation as a bold entrepreneur and industry innovator.
In recognition of her contributions, Smith received multiple accolades, including the 2023 Gold Stevie Award for Best Female Entrepreneur globally and the Gold Stevie Award for Social Change Maker of the Year at an event in New York’s Times Square. She was also named Best Female Entrepreneur in Canada at the 2022 Stevie Awards and has earned the Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Further, she was recognized with silver in the Diversity and Inclusion champion category at the BCBusiness 2024 Women of the Year Awards.
Today, as the founder, president, and CEO of Everything Podcasts, Smith collaborates with brands to deliver impactful stories that resonate with modern audiences. The company began as a single-source solution for podcast production but has since evolved to encompass a wide array of content formats, including audio, video, and social media.
Smith shared her insights on navigating important decisions throughout her career, emphasizing the need for intentionality. “I take the time to do my research and weigh risk against reward before making decisions,” she explained. Her focus on identifying sustained trends rather than fleeting ones allows her company to differentiate itself in a crowded market.
In discussing the shift in media consumption, Smith noted, “Podcasts have grown so dramatically because they fit perfectly into that on-demand world.” As audiences increasingly seek flexible and accessible storytelling, podcasts have emerged as a powerful medium for both entertainment and learning.
Reflecting on the responsibility that comes with her role, Smith stated, “I’ve never really experienced it as pressure. What I feel much more strongly is a sense of service.” She views her work as an opportunity to bring significant stories to the forefront, and acknowledges that while there are challenges, the motivation to contribute meaningfully drives her forward.
Addressing the balance between generating revenue and fostering social good, Smith described a dual approach. She established an internal committee at Everything Podcasts that selects up to ten charitable organizations to support annually on a pro bono basis. This initiative aligns with her belief that business success and social responsibility can coexist and even enhance one another.
Success as an entrepreneur, according to Smith, hinges on one’s relationship with fear. “You have to be willing to lean into it,” she advises. She encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to trust their instincts and follow their hearts in making crucial decisions.
For women leaders, Smith offers straightforward advice: “Lead with empathy.” She emphasizes the importance of authenticity in communication and empowering those around you. Maintaining composure under pressure is also essential, as team members look to their leaders for guidance.
Jennifer Smith’s journey exemplifies the impact that dedicated individuals can have on the media landscape and beyond. Through her innovative ventures and commitment to storytelling, she continues to inspire both current and future generations of media professionals.
