Vernon’s square dancing club, Star Country Squares, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter of a century of promoting fun, fitness, and friendship through dance. The event took place on September 6, 2023, bringing together current and former members who have enjoyed the vibrant community that the club fosters.

Joe Marcotte, who has been dancing with his wife, Roxy Rollins, for 13 years, now serves as the club’s president. He reflected on their first experience with the club, saying, “From day one at Star Country Squares, we were welcomed with a warm embrace, and plenty of smiles and laughs followed.” This welcoming atmosphere has been a hallmark of the club, encouraging newcomers to join and experience the joy of square dancing.

Square dancing involves eight participants forming a square on the dance floor, guided by a caller who directs the movements. As Marcotte explained, “It gets you to move to the music and it’s a really good experience. It’s good exercise, too.” The mental engagement required to follow the caller’s instructions not only provides physical activity but also enhances cognitive function, making it a holistic approach to well-being.

Long-Standing Traditions and New Beginnings

The club’s caller, Allan Peterson, has been calling dances for over 25 years, and his experience contributes to the enjoyable rhythm that keeps dancers engaged. Another long-time caller, Nelson Reeme, has been part of the square dancing scene even longer. Their expertise ensures that the energy on the dance floor remains high, creating an environment where friendships flourish. Marcotte noted, “There are a number of stories of people meeting and even getting married through the club.”

While Star Country Squares is celebrating its 25th year, square dancing in Vernon has a rich history that predates the club. Star Country Squares is the result of a merger between two earlier clubs, the Star Dusters and the Sun Country Squares, in 2000. This collaboration has allowed the club to grow and adapt over the years, maintaining its relevance in the community.

One remarkable member, Helen Sidney, 102, attended the anniversary celebration, showcasing the club’s appeal across generations. Sidney, a dedicated dancer for decades, expressed her enthusiasm by saying, “I wouldn’t have missed it for anything. I’ve enjoyed watching the dancing, hoping that I could do it again.” Her commitment to staying active is evident, as she regularly picks up litter on Bella Vista Road, emphasizing the importance of exercise at any age.

Open Houses for New Members

In an effort to continue expanding its community outreach, Star Country Squares is hosting open houses. The first event occurred on September 11, 2023, with another scheduled for September 18, 2023, from 19:00 to 21:00 at the Halina Centre. These open houses are designed to welcome newcomers, offering a chance to learn about the club and to join without any prior dancing experience necessary. “Just come as you are, we’ll teach you the steps,” Marcotte encouraged potential members.

Star Country Squares exemplifies how a local club can create lasting friendships and promote an active lifestyle. With its vibrant community spirit and commitment to inclusivity, the club is poised to continue thriving for many more years to come.
