Canadians Gain Access to New Cancer Clinical Trials Website

Canadians now have a new resource to help navigate cancer treatment options with the launch of a website dedicated to listing active cancer clinical trials. The Canadian Cancer Society announced this initiative on November 10, 2025, introducing the platform named Cancer Trials Canada. This bilingual site aims to make clinical trials, which have been available in the United States and Europe for years, more accessible to the general public.

Developed in collaboration with the Quebec–Clinical Research Organization in Cancer, the website is designed specifically for patients rather than healthcare professionals. According to Dr. Denis Soulières, a hematologist and medical oncologist who serves as a spokesperson for the Canadian Cancer Society, existing databases in Canada have primarily targeted the medical community. “The dissemination of information about clinical trials is something that’s been lacking,” Soulières stated. “There’s clearly a need that’s been expressed by the public.”

A survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society highlights the need for this initiative. The findings revealed that while 90 percent of respondents support expanding access to clinical trials for cancer patients, 56 percent reported limited knowledge about such trials. Alarmingly, 36 percent indicated they were unaware of clinical trials altogether.

Concerns about participation in clinical trials were significant. The survey showed that 74 percent of participants expressed hesitance due to fears regarding potential side effects, while 66 percent mentioned a lack of trust in unproven treatments as a deterrent. The online poll, which gathered responses from over 2,000 Canadians in January 2025, reflects a significant gap in public understanding.

The newly launched website not only lists clinical trials but also serves as an educational resource. It provides information about how clinical trials function, along with the associated risks and benefits. Dr. Soulières emphasized the importance of these trials, stating, “Unfortunately, we still have many types of cancer where the needs are significant, meaning the treatments that are currently available are not very effective.” He noted that exploring different treatment options through clinical trials is crucial for patients seeking alternatives.
