Chance Toder Inspires at Resilience Rewired Conference on Oct. 24
The upcoming Resilience Rewired conference on October 24, 2023, at the Keystone Centre in Manitoba promises to be a significant event, showcasing stories of overcoming adversity. Among the presenters is Chance Toder, a local resident whose life story exemplifies resilience. As a child, Toder underwent two open-heart surgeries, the second of which led to a stroke and a lengthy coma. Today, he is preparing to share his motivational journey with attendees.
At just 10 months old, Toder faced life-threatening health challenges. After his second surgery at age 11, he was in a coma for an extended period, leaving his family uncertain about his future. His mother, Jolene Toder, recalls the harrowing experience. “When Chance went into a coma, he remained there for a very, very long time,” she stated. “I am in awe of how far he’s come. I never thought that one day he would be sitting in front of all of these people telling his story.”
Toder’s speech will highlight his philosophy that disabilities should not hinder ambitions but can instead serve as motivation. He expressed, “I just want to show that having a disability doesn’t push you down, it drives you up. You can have somewhat of a normal life; it just looks a little bit different.” His journey into motivational speaking was inspired by family friend and online safety expert Val Caldwell, who will also present at the conference.
Caldwell’s presentation will address mental health concerns stemming from children’s reliance on technology. She advocates for setting boundaries around device use, particularly in private spaces. “Don’t allow kids to take devices to private spaces, including their bedrooms. Have rules in place,” Caldwell advises. She emphasizes the importance of parental involvement, noting that adults must serve as role models to foster healthy habits in their children.
Despite recent bans on cellphones in Manitoba schools, Caldwell reports that educators are grappling with the consequences of excessive screen time among students. “Teachers are seeing the impact of kids staying up all night, gaming and being on their devices,” she noted. Her strategies will include practical tips for parents to manage their children’s technology use effectively.
The keynote speaker for the conference, Dr. Jody Carrington, a clinical psychologist, will delve into the paradox of increased connectivity through technology alongside growing emotional disconnection. “For the first time in history, we’re dying faster from emotional illness than we are from physical illness,” she remarked. Carrington aims to shed light on the toll that constant digital engagement has on mental health and personal relationships.
She pointed out that societal pressures and the pervasive influence of technology create environments where anxiety and depression flourish. “We can’t address what we don’t acknowledge,” Carrington said, stressing the need for awareness in reversing these trends.
The Resilience Rewired conference will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is priced at $80 plus fees. For those interested in attending, tickets can be acquired through the Keystone Centre box office at 204-726-3500. This event is designed not only to inspire but also to equip attendees with strategies for navigating the challenges of modern life.
As speakers share their insights and personal stories, the conference aims to foster a sense of community and resilience among participants, encouraging them to connect in meaningful ways.
