Chilliwack Seniors Empowered to Get Fit with Choose to Move Program
Older adults in Chilliwack can now access a valuable resource aimed at enhancing their physical activity levels through the Choose to Move program. Set to enter its fourth year at the Bob Chan-Kent Family YMCA, this initiative offers a free, supportive environment for seniors who typically engage in less than 150 minutes of exercise each week.
The program is led by Carol Benson-Hitch, an activity coach at the Chilliwack YMCA. She provides personalized support to participants, beginning with one-on-one sessions to develop customized fitness plans. Following this initial phase, participants join weekly group sessions designed to foster motivation, accountability, and community among peers.
According to its online description, “Choose to Move has the potential to change the way you live for the better.” Each week concentrates on a specific theme, ranging from fall prevention to stress management and nutrition. Although participants do not engage in group workouts, they benefit from brief movement breaks during sessions, allowing them to share experiences and encourage one another on their fitness journeys.
Program Development and Registration Details
The Choose to Move initiative was created by the Active Aging Society and developed by a research team at the University of British Columbia, with financial backing from the Government of British Columbia. This collaboration emphasizes the commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of older adults in the community.
Interested individuals can register for an introductory ice-breaker session scheduled for February 5, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the YMCA. To reserve a spot, participants can email Carol Benson-Hitch at [email protected]. The main Choose to Move program will commence the following week on February 12, 2026, at the Bob Chan-Kent Family YMCA, located at 45844 Hocking Avenue.
