Community Voices Address Local Healthcare and Global Issues

Residents of Steinbach, Manitoba, are voicing their concerns about local healthcare and broader global issues. In a recent letter to the editor, one community member highlighted the inadequate internet connectivity at the Steinbach Medical Centre, which hampers telehealth services. The author emphasized that their doctor is unable to conduct virtual appointments due to the poor internet service, leading to unnecessary phone consultations.
The growth of Steinbach has been rapid, with an influx of new residents that has outpaced the availability of healthcare providers. The writer commended the Health Minister for her prompt responses to concerns raised via email and suggested utilizing the Bethesda Foundation for doctor recruitment as a potential solution. The letter pointed out that involving private and charitable institutions could help alleviate the pressure on public healthcare resources.
Concerns about global issues were also raised in a separate letter from Frank Sterle Jr., who addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Sterle noted that many Jewish individuals are increasingly vocal in their opposition to the actions of the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) against Palestinian civilians, describing it as mass murder and ethnic cleansing. He expressed empathy for those who face backlash for their views, particularly the accusations of being “self-hating” directed at individuals who publicly denounce violence against non-combatants.
In another letter, Marlene Reiss shared her personal experiences as a Jewish resident of Winnipeg. She expressed her fear of wearing a Star of David and her apprehension while participating in community activities. Reiss lamented the current climate and called for a return to normalcy, emphasizing the need for peace and resolution in the ongoing conflict.
The letters reflect a community grappling with both local healthcare challenges and deep international concerns. As residents engage with these pressing issues, the call for action and dialogue remains strong.
For those wishing to contribute their thoughts on local or global matters, letters can be submitted to the editor at [email protected].
