Federal Funding Fuels New Wellness Centre in Eastern P.E.I.
The federal government has announced funding for a new wellness centre in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, a development hailed by local leaders as a transformative opportunity for the community. The initiative, supported by the SeaRoots Alliance, aims to address the growing need for health and recreational facilities in Souris, a town that many residents believe lacks such infrastructure.
Ashley Sherbanuk, a board member of the SeaRoots Alliance, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We’re really excited to bring a wellness centre to our communities because we kind of lack the infrastructure.” The design for the centre is still in progress, with community consultations conducted over the summer. Plans include an NHL-sized ice surface, a walking track, a library, and a multi-use gym, ensuring that the facility will cater to residents of all ages.
Megan Cheverie, the treasurer of the SeaRoots Alliance, emphasized the significance of the project, referring to it as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity for our community.” She believes the wellness centre will not only enhance local services but also attract more visitors to Souris. “We’re just excited to have it,” Cheverie added.
Kent MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Cardigan, also highlighted the importance of this investment. “To have a facility that’s multi-faceted, that will be about learning, that will be about recreation, and that will include seniors’ facilities, that’s exciting,” he said. This investment underscores the federal government’s commitment to improving community health and wellness.
Dennis McNally, another board member of the SeaRoots Alliance, shared his eagerness to see construction begin, while noting the importance of careful planning. “I keep a shovel in the back of my truck all the time just in case,” he remarked. “But the due diligence required for a facility of this magnitude is considerable.”
The project has been under consideration for over two years, demonstrating strong community engagement and support. With renovations to existing facilities in the area also taking place, the new wellness centre is poised to significantly enhance the quality of life for Souris residents.
In addition to addressing local health needs, the wellness centre is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region. As the design process continues, community members remain hopeful and excited about the potential benefits this facility will bring.
With federal funding now secured, the SeaRoots Alliance and local officials are focused on finalizing plans and moving forward with construction. As development progresses, the wellness centre is set to become a hub for recreation, learning, and community engagement in eastern Prince Edward Island.
