Flu Cases Surge in Montreal as Doctor Warns of Severity
According to Dr. Earl Rubin, the flu season has arrived earlier than expected in Montreal and is spreading rapidly. As the Director of the Infectious Disease Division at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, Dr. Rubin notes that reported flu cases are doubling each week, with many cases likely going unreported. The impact is being felt not only in his hospital but across the region.
This flu season is notably severe, with a predominant strain that Dr. Rubin warns could mutate, potentially leading to increased cases and more severe illness. “It’s hitting right around the time of these holiday gatherings,” he stated in an interview with CTV News. Given the timing, he emphasizes the importance of taking precautions, particularly for individuals who are at higher risk of complications, especially those who have not received a flu vaccine.
Symptoms of the flu include high fever lasting up to five days, muscle pain, congestion, coughing, malaise, and headaches. Dr. Rubin strongly recommends vaccination as a primary means of preventing severe illness. He also advises individuals displaying symptoms to limit exposure to others by avoiding gatherings when possible.
To mitigate the risk of spreading the flu, Dr. Rubin suggests several preventive measures. These include coughing into one’s elbow, frequent handwashing, refraining from sharing personal items such as napkins, and wearing a mask if symptomatic. These steps are particularly crucial during the holiday season when families and friends gather.
As the flu season progresses, the healthcare community urges vigilance and proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations. The combination of early onset and the potential for severe cases underscores the need for public awareness and action.
With information compiled from reports by CTV News, it is clear that addressing the flu outbreak is essential for safeguarding public health in Montreal and beyond.
