Health Canada Recalls Nitrous Oxide Canisters for Inhalation
Health Canada has issued a recall for specific products distributed nationwide that were found to be intended for inhalation of nitrous oxide gas. On March 27, 2024, the agency identified three unlicensed canisters from the Whip-it! brand that pose significant health risks when used recreationally.
The Whip-it! canisters, small metal pressurized tanks, contain nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. While similar products are legitimate tools in commercial kitchens for recharging whipped cream dispensers, Health Canada has flagged these particular canisters for their misuse as a recreational drug. Nitrous oxide is also used in medical settings for its sedative properties, but the agency warns of the serious dangers associated with recreational use without medical supervision.
According to Health Canada, nitrous oxide can induce feelings of euphoria and relaxation, yet it carries a range of severe potential side effects. These include loss of consciousness, anemia, impaired bowel and bladder function, heart issues, asphyxiation, blood clots, and nerve damage. In a public advisory released earlier this year, Health Canada cautioned that repeated use increases the risk of severe outcomes and can result in lasting neurological damage even after cessation. Furthermore, regular consumption can lead to addiction and withdrawal symptoms.
The federal government has indicated that nitrous oxide is known by various street names, such as “whippets,” “hippy crack,” “NOS,” and “nang.” While it is illegal to advertise and sell nitrous oxide products for inhalation, Health Canada has noted that some products are still available for purchase online and in retail outlets, including variants that feature flavored gas, which is prohibited.
The recalled Whip-it! canisters were sold by KDK Distributors, a company based in Calgary, Alberta, which also appears to offer cannabis smoking accessories. The recall serves as a reminder of the need for consumers to be aware of the risks associated with the misuse of such products and to adhere to legal guidelines regarding their sale and distribution.
Consumers who have purchased the affected canisters are advised to discontinue use immediately and return them to the retailer for a refund. Health Canada continues to monitor the situation and encourages anyone experiencing negative health effects from nitrous oxide to seek medical attention promptly.
