Health Workers Urge Public to Carry Naloxone This Holiday Season
Health officials are encouraging the public to carry naloxone, a lifesaving medication, during the holiday season to combat the rising incidence of opioid overdoses. In a recent campaign by the Kane County Health Department, health workers emphasize that having naloxone on hand can make a crucial difference in emergency situations.
Faith Bullis, a surveillance practitioner with Kane County, highlights the importance of being proactive. “I carry naloxone because carrying naloxone means I can act and not just watch,” she stated in a promotional video aimed at raising awareness about the medication. The campaign is especially significant during the holidays, a time noted for increased vulnerability among individuals struggling with substance use.
The distribution of naloxone, also known as Narcan, has been credited with contributing to a decrease in opioid overdose deaths in Illinois. According to state records, the number of fatalities fell from 3,160 in 2022 to 2,855 in 2023, marking a reduction of 305 deaths.
Many public health officials are sharing personal reasons for carrying naloxone. Yolanda Morris, a public health nurse, expressed, “I carry naloxone because, simply, one dose can save a life.” Similarly, Michelle Espino, a receptionist, stated her commitment to being prepared, saying, “I carry Narcan because I want to be ready if someone needs me.”
### The Importance of Preparedness
Statements from other health workers reinforce the need for readiness in the face of potential overdoses. Elizabeth Nuñez, a violence prevention specialist, noted, “I carry naloxone because I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.” Her sentiments echo a broader call for public awareness and preparation.
The urgency of this message is underscored by recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which reported 87,000 opioid-related deaths in the U.S. in 2024. Miguel Nuñez, a communicable disease coordinator, wants to ensure he is ready to help if the situation arises. “I want to be ready and to save a life if the need ever arises,” he explained.
Healthcare professionals like Sharon Cabrera, a substance use prevention specialist, emphasize the importance of carrying naloxone not just for strangers but for loved ones. “It could be a friend, neighbor or family member,” she said.
### Naloxone: Accessible and Effective
Naloxone can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses by binding to opioid receptors, effectively restoring normal respiration to someone who has stopped breathing. It is available without a prescription and comes in a two-dose nasal spray, making it easy to carry.
According to Michael Isaacson, Executive Director of the Kane County Health Department, “Naloxone is easy to use, easy to carry and it saves lives.” He encourages everyone to be prepared, especially during holiday gatherings or community events. “Being prepared can make all the difference,” he added.
In Kane County, naloxone is free and accessible at more than 100 locations. Some notable sites include:
– Shell Station, 13 N. River Road, North Aurora
– TriCity Health Partnership Medical and Dental Clinic, 318 Walnut St., St. Charles
– St. Charles Police Department, 1515 W. Main St.
– Campton Hills Police Department, 40W270 LaFox Road
– Speedway, 1495 W. Wilson St., Batavia
A comprehensive map of all distribution points is available online, ensuring that residents can easily find naloxone in their vicinity.
As the holiday season approaches, health officials stress that carrying naloxone can be a small but significant step toward ensuring community safety and well-being.
