Inquest Announced for 2020 Death of Ottawa Inmate William Renwick

Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, the regional supervising coroner, has announced an inquest into the death of William Renwick, who died while in custody at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre. Renwick, aged 49, succumbed to injuries sustained during an altercation with his cellmate on November 8, 2020, approximately three weeks after the incident.

The inquest is mandated under Ontario’s Coroners Act and will investigate the circumstances surrounding Renwick’s death. An official jury will assess the events leading up to the fatal injuries and may recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Renwick was injured during a fight with his cellmate, Kavi Bar Wari, a 37-year-old man.
