JoeAnna’s House Expands to Meet Growing Family Needs

JoeAnna’s House, a vital resource for families facing medical crises, is set to expand its facilities to better accommodate the growing demand for support near Kelowna General Hospital (KGH). Since its inception in 2019, the house has provided essential lodging for families traveling from across the Southern Interior, but has frequently faced capacity challenges. With only 20 rooms available, the facility has turned away more than 1,000 families, highlighting the urgent need for additional space.
Located in Kelowna, British Columbia, JoeAnna’s House has become a critical lifeline for families who often find themselves in distressing situations while a loved one receives medical care. The facility allows families to remain close to their loved ones, alleviating some of the stress associated with hospital visits. Currently, families from locations like Golden to Osoyoos face long waitlists, leaving them to choose between expensive hotel accommodations or unsafe night-time travel along dark highways.
Community Support Drives Expansion
The planned expansion of JoeAnna’s House is not just about creating more beds; it signifies a commitment to comfort, connection, and community during trying times. The initiative is backed by several hospital foundations, including the KGH Foundation, SOS Medical Foundation, East Kootenay Foundation for Health, Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation, and Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation. These organizations have come together to ensure that families can find a supportive environment close to the specialized care provided at KGH.
“This expansion is possible because of the generosity of communities from every corner of the Southern Interior,” stated Carly Reuter, director of community engagement at JoeAnna’s House. “Health care knows no borders, and JoeAnna’s House is a true reflection of what can happen when communities unite for a common purpose, keeping families close to care and one another.”
Personal Stories Highlight the Need for Growth
For families like Jeannie and Ken Randle from Penticton, JoeAnna’s House has been more than just a place to stay; it has become a source of strength and belonging. “It’s the greatest gift I can imagine,” Jeannie expressed, reflecting on her experience during her husband’s critical recovery. “Being at JoeAnna’s House helped his recovery and gave me a sense of calm I couldn’t have found anywhere else.”
Throughout the day, Jeannie was by Ken’s side as he underwent rehabilitation, while the evenings at JoeAnna’s House provided her a much-needed retreat. “The staff were so caring, always there to listen,” she recounted. “Being able to unwind and connect with others going through similar experiences made a world of difference.”
These intimate moments—conversations around the kitchen table, late-night cups of tea, and the simple act of walking across the street to visit loved ones—transform JoeAnna’s House into a true home-away-from-home. They serve as a reminder that families are not alone during their most challenging times.
The decision to expand JoeAnna’s House aims to ensure that every family has access to a safe and supportive environment while their loved ones receive care. The additional rooms will reduce the burden of travel and accommodation costs, allowing families to focus on what truly matters: healing and connection.
Every contribution towards the expansion will help bring families closer to the care they need, while also fostering hope and resilience within the community. “Every new room means another family has a safe space close to their loved one,” Reuter emphasized.
