Killarney Hospital Welcomes Two International Doctors Amid Staffing Crisis
Two internationally trained physicians have been recruited to address a staffing shortage at the Tri-Lake Health Centre in Killarney, a vital regional hospital located approximately 240 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg. This move is expected to significantly bolster healthcare services in the area, which has faced increasing challenges in maintaining adequate medical staffing.
Killarney Turtle-Mountain Mayor Janice Smith confirmed that the new doctors, Shamsudeen and Olamide Usman, a husband-and-wife team, were selected through a program offered by the University of Manitoba aimed at assisting international medical graduates in obtaining licensure in Canada. Mayor Smith expressed enthusiasm about their arrival, stating, “They are very anxious to get their careers going, and we are just thrilled that they are going to be part of our community.”
The couple recently visited Killarney to explore local amenities, including schools and recreational facilities, as well as the Tri-Lake Health Centre, which features a 24/7 emergency unit, a personal care wing, and diagnostic services such as X-ray and ultrasound. Their arrival will bring the hospital’s physician count to five, meeting the full staffing complement required to serve the community effectively.
The Usmans are anticipated to begin their roles by late August 2026. They have three children under the age of six and are among many families looking for stability and opportunity in rural Manitoba. Mayor Smith noted that the couple chose Killarney after visiting more than a dozen communities in the region. “They actually chose us,” she added, highlighting the community’s appeal.
Manitoba is currently grappling with a physician shortage, particularly in rural areas. According to Doctors Manitoba, the province ranks second-last in Canada for the number of physicians per capita. A report released in October indicated some improvement in recruitment efforts, but challenges remain due to physician retirements, burnout, and out-migration to other provinces.
In a statement, Dr. Nichelle Desilets, president of Doctors Manitoba, welcomed the Usmans to Prairie Mountain, describing their recruitment as a significant milestone. “This is great news to cap off what’s turned into a record-breaking year for doctor recruitment,” she said, emphasizing the need for improved retention strategies moving forward. “While recruitment is improving, retaining doctors remains a challenge, and that must be the focus for 2026.”
Killarney has had success in attracting healthcare professionals through the assistance of Winnipeg-based recruiting firm Waterford Global. The community welcomed two physicians from England, Dr. Jim Heptinstall and Dr. Dominic Hennessy, last year, complementing the existing staff that includes Dr. Mark Bemment, also from the UK.
Mayor Smith reiterated the importance of ongoing recruitment efforts, acknowledging that securing healthcare professionals is an ongoing challenge. “You never stop recruiting,” she stated, underscoring the complexity of attracting physicians to smaller communities where personal circumstances can shift rapidly.
As the healthcare landscape evolves in Manitoba, the recruitment of the Usmans represents a hopeful step towards alleviating some of the pressures facing the region’s medical infrastructure. The emphasis on community support and the commitment of local officials offer a blueprint for other rural areas facing similar challenges.
