Langley’s Run for Sobriety Surpasses Fundraising Goal Ahead of Event
The fifth annual Run for Sobriety in Langley is set to take place on October 4, 2024, and has already exceeded its fundraising goal of $15,000 for the Canadian Mental Health Association B.C. Division (CMHA). As of September 8, 2024, the event had raised $16,496 through pledges on the CMHA website, with more than 300 participants already registered. Organizers anticipate that approximately 500 individuals will attend.
Participant Laura Murray currently leads the fundraising efforts, having raised $1,478.05. In a statement shared online, she expressed her excitement about the event, noting, “After recently getting a handle on my own substance use struggles, I am thrilled to see a charity event like this one.” Over the past four years, the Run for Sobriety has raised a total of $17,000 to support mental health initiatives.
Celebrating Sobriety and Community Awareness
The Run for Sobriety was established by Josh Baron to commemorate the anniversary of his own sobriety. The inaugural event in 2021 attracted just 25 participants, but it has grown significantly since then. Baron aims to raise awareness about alcoholism and substance use, particularly among young people, while promoting healthy coping mechanisms. “It’s a celebration of my personal sobriety, but also we’re just trying to get out in the community and make people aware,” Baron explained in an interview with the Langley Advance Times in 2023.
Baron credits running as a vital part of his mental health journey, stating, “Running for me has always sort of kept my mind in check and helped me along my journey.” This year’s event will feature both 10K and 5K races, hosted at Noel Booth Elementary School, located at 20202 35 Ave.
Participants can look forward to a vibrant post-race celebration, which will include a barbecue provided by the South Point Real Estate Team, live music from Drew Storey, and various draw prizes and awards. The races will commence at 10:00 a.m., following an opening ceremony at 9:40 a.m.
For further details about the event, individuals can visit the Run For Sobriety Association website. The positive community impact of this event highlights the importance of mental health awareness and support, resonating with many individuals who have faced similar challenges.
