Megan and Lauren’s Pajama Drive Brings Joy to Hospitalized Kids
On Christmas Eve in 2018, Megan Patrick from Stoney Point faced a challenging situation when she was diagnosed with leukemia and celebrated the holiday in a hospital without festive pajamas. Determined to ensure that other children would have a special experience, her family initiated a pajama drive aimed at providing holiday pajamas for children in local hospitals. This initiative began as a heartfelt response to Megan’s own experience and has since grown into a community-wide effort.
After a second leukemia diagnosis in April 2022 paused the pajama campaign, Lauren Meadows, a close friend of Megan, took the initiative to revive it in 2023. Instead of birthday gifts, Lauren requested donations of pajamas from her friends and family. The response was overwhelming, resulting in more than 500 pairs of pajamas donated to various hospitals including the Windsor Regional Hospital Pediatric Floor, the Ronald McDonald House in London, Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, Erie Shores Health Care, and others.
The success of the 2023 campaign inspired further action. In 2024, Megan and Lauren’s efforts expanded significantly, leading to the donation of over 600 pairs of pajamas to the same hospitals and organizations. Their initiative not only brings comfort to children facing health challenges but also fosters a sense of community spirit among local residents.
Both girls, who attend Centennial Central Public School in Comber, are excited to continue this tradition. Their school has joined the effort by collecting pajamas on their behalf. Recently, they set up a booth at the Tilbury BIA Christmas Market, where they successfully raised $1,500 to purchase additional pajamas, with donations still coming in.
The pajama drive will accept contributions until December 15, 2024. Those interested in donating can e-transfer to [email protected] or contact the organizers for pickup or drop-off options. The ongoing support from the community has been a source of joy for both Megan and Lauren, as they aim to spread holiday cheer to children during a difficult time.
